Go to the same gas stations over and over. I get 29 in my 2.3 standard with pilot/shell and 25.5 with murphy/valero

Run it a but longer and see if it comes up. 15 towing and 16 in the cold are both fairly normal, its possible the 12.5 was just crappy gas.

+1, and it is winter so the gas in the tank is the special winter blend that affects m.p.g.

It shouldn't be that big of a difference in mileage unless it is a huge coincidence. My old 04 4*4 got almost identical mileage regardless of where I filled-up, and I kept track for 3-4 months with an approved D.O.T. ledger. I fueled at BP, Shell, Sunoco, and Citgo (before they were rebranded Valero). I marked in my book to the hundred's/thousand's how much money the vehicle took, gallons used, and mileage. I then ran a spreadsheet, and I was surprised that eventhough I travel mostly highway, I still averaged 19.5 miles to the gallon. I'm also a lightfoot and rarely travel more than 5 over the speed limit. Also, my vehicle was newer (less than 45K miles), and I properly aired the tires. The main problem with computing fuel economy is consistency. Even our owner's manual says to fill-up at the same station, facing the same direction, at the same time of day, etc. However, that is not possible since there are variations in the gas (how old, when manufactured, etc.), variations in temperature/humidity, and the biggest difference is individual driving habits. Also, two individuals do not drive in the same exact manner. Last, city-traffic messes with fuel economy because of the constant stop-and-go, so if a driver experiences a lot of traffic, bad weather, etc. the accuracy of the mileage isn't taken into account.
