4.10 rear gear ratio question.
my truck has from factory, 4.10s. i was curios if gettin bigger tires would help my gas mileage.... i have 27-27.5 tires on it now, but was lookin at some 29-30 inch tall tires..... im runnin right around 2200 with my tires now. what do you guys think, would this work??

I always thought bigger tires would hurt your mpg's? Especially if they're a lot heavier.

Re: 4.10 rear gear ratio question.
i have 4.10's with 33's. That brings me down to about a 3.35 gear ratio all said and done. dropped me about 2-4 mpg's as I do a lot of lower speed driving on the farms and back roads. I plan on re gearing to 4.56's when I get the money to bring me up around the 3.73 ratio. I noticed a good drop in torque but a good gain on my highway cruising rpm.

Re: 4.10 rear gear ratio question.
yeah im lookin at more higher big road mpg... i tend to stay away from cities and highways. i found a website that will give you the size of tire you need with what gear ratio to get a certain rpm. it said my gear ratio with 29-30 inch tires will put my 55 speed rpm at 2000 rather than the 2200 it has now, it said it will give me a +5-6% gain in mpg.

That's a theoretical MPG gain. In reality you'll probably see about half that. You will be slinging around more weight with bigger tires, and rolling weight really hurts as it has both linear and rotational inertia that must be overcome.

Re: 4.10 rear gear ratio question.
actually, scrap everything to this point. You have a 2.5. You will not have the torque to maintain a bigger tire and still get good mileage. I would stay with what you have.
Most online calculators are based on a v8 at a 1:1 ratio. But, you have to factor in the torque the v8 makes, it can maintain a higher ratio without lugging. But your 4 cyl will have a hard time.
Right now your final drive is around 3.23. If anything, go DOWN in tire size to get that up to about 3.55. Or, just cruize around in 4th.
fwiw, we put 235's on my dads ranger (2.3 5spd) He could not run 5th gear without lugging and loosing mileage. But, he had 3.73. We swapped in a 4.10 expo and he got back to where he should be.
