Default 1996 Ford Ranger, shut off and won't start, ideas?

Last month our truck shut it's self off while we was at light, and it wouldn't start back. Finally we found a way to get it home, and so far we have tried several things and nothing seems to work.

At first, when we would turn the key it would make a clicking sound. Now when we turn the key, it does nothing.

We did the first thing, check the gas! Then after we got it home, we have took the starter off, it tested good.

We took the battery in, it tested good.

We took the alternator in, it tested good.

We bought a new solenoid.

I've cleaned all the connector ends going to the battery and the solenoid.

It's been this way for about a month, any ideas on what else to try would be gladly appreciated.
Oh, it's an automatic.
Also I know little about cars, so any tutorial/manual would be helpful.

Hi
I think it is your spark control modular. Its on the side of the distributor and
has few wires going to it.

Its called an 'inertia switch" and it's clicking itself on. It's an energancy fule cut off switch made to stop the fule from being pumped into the engin in case of an accident.

I'm having the same problam. My truck died at an intersection as i was turning into it. Then it dies a few minutes later at another intersection. I had it flatbedded to Firestone ( 80 bucks ) where they found the problam and re-set it for 52 bucks.

It has since happened again three more times.

The switch is located on the firewall on the passenger side. It may be ( like mine ) a silver box with a red rubber top/plunger. If you put your finger on the red plunger and press it down, and start the engin, it should start right up. If your truck has been idel for a while it may not if only because the gas may have evaporatted...I'm just guessing that.

I was told that this switch can "go bad" which I don't understand. How does something go bad it if never gets used?

Hope this helps. I'm trying to find out how much something like this will cost to replace.....let me know if you do that.
