Default Odometer working??

I was wondering about the odometer on my 2002 ranger. not necessarily the odometer but the other thing above it. the odometer has 6 digits that rotate to show the kilometers/miles on the vehicle, but what about that other thing right above it that only has 4 rotating digits? I dont know what its called but I heard that it calculated the amount of kilometers on one tank of gas so that you can calculate your fuel economy? I also heard it calculated the amount of hours on your engine? it has that small rod that you push that resets it to zero. when should I push this rod? I noticed that when my truck is running in park and not moving (its in storage), one of the digits will move slowly and complete one revolution to the next number over about an hour. is it supposed to move when Im in park and not moving or is this normal? Im very confused about this thing and im quite curious to know if it is working properly and what its function is. if anybody knows what Im talking about please help.

heres a picture of what im talking about http://www.subwaytruckparts.com/new_...peedometer.jpg

its your trip meter, shows how many miles traveled, if you push the "rod" it will clear the 4 boxes to "0000" then as you drive it will go "0001" for one mile and so on...if you want to calculate gas mileage its easy with that, take x amount of miles example "250" and say you got 10 gallons of gas and filled it up you are getting 25mpg..its pretty neat. hope this helps, anymore questions just ask!

so is it a bad thing that my trip meter is moving ever so slightly when my truck is not moving at all but just idling in park?

I would say no.... does your odometer move? No one cares what the trip meter says except you, the odometer is the one that has to be accurate. The trip meter is only there for driver convenience.
