More Power

Hi I am new to the forum, I have a 99 Ranger with a 4.0l 4x4 auto and was wondering what you guys do to get some more power out of these trucks? (ie tuner, intake ect.)

First buy a new K&N air filter. It may be expensive but it adds fuel economy and power. Second for a little more money get a cold air intake kit its called. Cheapest add on and easy to install. Then do little things like: fuel filter replacement, oil change, coolant system flush. Then if you want to get more expensive, buy chips for the computer that adds power or a supercharger. The only thing is it is a automatic so power is limited to the predetermined shift points of the computer. Not saying your truck cant go fast.

Welcome to FRF! There are numerous performance mods you can do but it will ultimately depend on your budget. Popular ones: Tuner, intake, exhaust, under drive pulleys, V8 swap, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I am used to Mustangs but really needed a truck, I may think about building a stroker for it next summer when i can use my motorcycle for transportation again. Do you guys recommend using full synthetic in these trucks or is regular oil good enough?

Intake last. They don't do much and no don't buy a K&N FIPK since they don't block the intake from engine bay heat.

In my unscientific, unresearched opinion, as long as you change the oil as required regular oil is good enough but synthetic is better.

No difference in performance, or economy.

The stock intake is already drawing from cold air. This is another waste of money.

What is the logic behind that?

The logic is to get more air volume before it enters the engine. I know the one i had on my mustang added a little bit of power but wasnt sure how these engines respond to stuff like that.

Nothing on the engine is as restrictive as the heads. Without porting, valves or cams this isn't going to get any better.

The stock maps are soft enough you can remove fuel and add timing to make the best gains. Most Fords have really soft maps.

Yes we know how an intake works. Since its a truck engine it can barely flow anything. The stock box isn't that restrictive. Well at least on my 03 it isn't.

Your best bet is to get a tuner and get to modifying Fords "tune".

A K&N intake will make the engine bay look cool, while hurting performance.

Exhaust will make it louder, but won't really gain you anything till you do more work to the rest of the engine.

Coil packs will give you a lil more performance by lightening your wallet. The stock ignition is more than sufficient till you do major mods.

Start with a tuner, then headers, then port and polish the heads, then super charge it. Basically follow the same procedures you would on a v-6 mustang, it is the same motor after all.

I got a Superchips Flashpac, it does help with some seat of the pants HP. Made the transmission shifts a lot firmer too. I'm kinda new to the small V6 too mine is a 3.0. pretty snappy, but looking for more power and better mileage. After all thats why I bought a small truck. If I wanted to tow or haul anything I would have got an F150

Cold air intake + Exhaust... I cut mine after the cat and straight piped it out the side infront of the rear wheel at a 45degree angle and went w/ bigger piping and it sounds sick as hell. The throttle response is quicker too
