Default What kind of scanner to buy?

Ive seen a whole lot of police/fire/emergency scanners on the internet but I am not sure which one to buy. I just need something simple to cough monitor police cough I meancuz I'm a first response person and all

The only one I could find that looked like it was for vehicles is a uniden model.. is there anything else out there or does anyone have one that they want rid of for cheap? thanks!

Soon to come: fender flare removal, tear off paint under them, replace with bedliner all the way around the truck, paint topper, fix window seals on topper, build roofrack for topper, install shit on roofrack, and make the inside of the topper livable.

The Best: UNIDEN BCD996XT
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...ners/1996.html

There are a lot of scanners that are cheaper that don't pick up the digital comms which may work for now in your area, but IIRC there is a Federal mandate that all emergency comms be switched to digital by 2014 or something so you would end up having to turn around and buy a new scanner in three years anyways.

The antenna you mount to your truck is probably more important than the scanner you choose though. Below is a link to a good one that is fairly affordable.

Be aware that, in some states (don't know about Ohio) having a police scanner in your vehicle is against the law. Get caught with it and it will be confiscated on the spot and a citation issued.

Ny has that law for non emergency personel as well.

I have a Unident Bearcat 355c, good basic scanner that does what I need.

If your trying to listen to police its going to be very hard. Police still use 10 codes and if you don't know what that is then how the hell you going to know what your listening to... Just use 5-0 radio App.

i actually know a few 10 codes because i work at a local pizza joint that uses some kind of radio in the trucks similar to cbs. not sure what the freq or whatever for them is though i havent investigated it.

Washington County, Ohio and it's local towns and cities appear to use conventional radio systems rather than anything trunked or P25. Any scanner can monitor these systems. You do NOT need an expensive digital trunking scanner.

The state uses a digital trunking system. This includes the state police and all the other state agencies. If you want to listen to them, you will need one of the expensive digital trunking scanners.
