also, check your battery blanket (many rangers with a block heater also have one) it should be warm.

Prince George, that place is cool...one day I would live there. ^-^

On my truck I always can feel that the air coming out of the vent is slightly warm(on the "feet heat" mode) when I've had it plugged in overnight. Also, at night I can hear the faintest humming sound when it's plugged in and I listen under the hood (bad?).

Woohoo another PG-er. If it doesn't struggle when starting, its working. And I don't think I've ever seen my temp gauge in the middle after sitting all night at -30 and just starting it up, even when plugged in.

You can also see a slight spark when you unplug it that means its working and yes if you listen very closely you will hear a slight buzz or hum. I feel your pain yesterday morning when I left for work at 4:30 am it was -48c in Edmonton Alberta FML lol

thanks for the advice eh, I tried unplugging it and looking for a spark but the cord was on so tight that when i pulled it apart it was too fast for me to see a spark at all oh well i will try it with a different cord and Im gonna feel my engine block as well and see if it is warm. I tried locating the block heater but i can't seem to find it but whatever.

I've never used by block heater on my truck yet, it hasn't been that cold or snowy here in SW Ontario. Like others said, on a cold engine, when you plug it in, after a minute or so, you should be able to hear a hissing noise. This is because a block heater is a small electrical element like in your kettle. I think they usually take the place of one of the freeze plugs in the block or another opening to the water jackets.

And I'm a Quesnelian.
Headed back to Fort Nelson in the morning. It will probably be colder up there.

well i didnt end up finding my block heater but I left it plugged in for the night and i felt my engine block and it is nice and toasty! this is a huge relief that its working. i would hate to have to go through all the trouble of replacing it and all the new cords and stuff. its prolly simpler than it sounds but im just glad i dont have to do it.
