What kind of mpg does that 4cyl generally yield?
From my experience with four cylinder trucks, expect about 21 - 22 mpg. That is in the Appalachian Mountain Plateau area though. In Oklahoma, you will probably see better. For a daily driver, you might want to consider passenger car tires since they will give a mpg or two better than a truck tire.

Get something with a limited slip if you can and a 3.73:1 rear end. The 3.45:1 in my '98 is a bit to tall for it I think.

Get a manual too. They get slightly better mileage and are less messy when it comes time to do a fluid change on the transmission. The automatics don't have a drain plug, so you have to drop the whole pan to change the fluid and filter. It can be messy.

I would second the super cab over the regular cab. There is very little room for storage in the regular cab. Either way, you will still get the six foot bed. There are some seven foot beds out there with the regular cab but I don't see them very often.

I have never gotten below 24 MPG with my truck. 2008 2.3 4 Cyl, Manual Trans

Your son will probably get the same since Oklahoma is about like Texas, (not too many hills)

YMMV

----------

Just to add, a few issues I have had with my truck are:
Fuel Pump
Replaced Fuel Pump Today.
Blend Door Actuator
Replaced Blend Door Actuator Today

Also, if you find a 2006 that is within your range you might like it a bit better for styling. I like that styling more because the mirrors are bigger, boxy, and the Ford Ovals are huge.

I say get the super cab....My buddy has regular cab and theres just no room in it...lol Like someone has previously said there is some stuff I dont like to put in the bed no matter what( work gear, electronic stuff etc) Idk what your sons situation is but if he goes to college in a regular cab ranger itll be tough...when I moved to Bliss I had my cab loaded with clothes laptop guitar and my seat moved way too far up to be comfy and still had the bed with stuff for work...like I said idk his situation(Im guessing 15-17) but if he keeps the ranger till college itll pay off then!

I will be the upteenth person suggesting the extended cab, even if you dont get the 2 half doors, the extra space is great, and on occasion you can put people back there. I have crammed 5 adults in the cab of my ranger (2 in back, 3 across the front). If we had another option we would have taken it, but after the other car wouldnt start, we drove 200 miles to rochester that way.

I with my set up I'm pulling around 16, in terms of milage. Not thrilled with it but given its a 4x4 with 4.10 gears its nothing to complain about.

If you can get him the fleetside bed, the stepside is too small to be really useful.

As far as issues, the only thing I can reccomend is, if the truck has a bedliner in it, get under it and check for rust. Found a good sized rust hole in the middle of my bed after I bought it. In reality its in a place where it doesnt really matter and the liner provides enough support, but its still something to keep an eye out for.

I think, if the OP goes with a four banger, four doors is not an option. You have to go with a V6 to get the rear doors.
