My 2003 FX4 won't shift into gear from nuetral...when the engine is running. It IS COLD here..like 15 to 20 below and I don't keep it in a garage..but this problem has happened before when it wasn't quite so cold...and it sort of fixed itself. I put fluid in the clutch resevoir ..but still no go...it has 135,000 miles and no major issues .any suggestions of what to do in the cold?

you might need to replace your slave cylinder.. which would basically be a clutch job.



my thought is that since brake fluid tends to trap moisture, maybe its freezing up? or am I way off?

ok' i've heard of a slave cylinder; but clearly don't quite know what that is..I like to run dogs; more than drive my little truck..so I'll look into the slave cylinder thing..and yes; everything fluid kind of gets sluggish..but I think the problem started before it got so cold; it just got worse with the cold!

i have heard of slave cylinders freezing. is your pedal too hard to push in? well harder than normal? and yes open up the master cylinder and see if the fluid is frozen or not. but you should probably try parking it in the garage. it might help.

the slave cylinder is inside the transmission. its what disengages your clutch when you push it in. if its bad or frozen it wont work properly. one more thing to try..... it take 2 people but on the driver side of the trany is a bleeder valve for the slave cylinder. have a person sit inside and pump the clutch pedal a couple times. have him hold it in and crack open the valve. do not let him release the pedal till you close the valve again. close the valve after it stops pushing fluid out. do it a couple times. it is kinda messy you will want a rag to cover the valve so it doesnt spray all over the place and get all over you. make sure you have some more DOT3 brake fluid to put back in the resevior. dont let the resevoir get too low either. see if that makes a difference

Put the trans in 2nd with the engine off, clutch in . Start the engine, let out the clutch go for a drive to warm up the lube in the transmission Let it get warm then try to upshift. No guarantees, but it should work.
