Default Catalytic converter question

My cat went bad, and I can't afford to replace it, so i took it off and shook all the loose junk out of it, and left half the stuff in it that was fine and not loose Will that cause any problems?

At most it may set a code and your check engine light will be on. It could also effect your gas mileage slightly. I know quite a few people who have done the exact same thing but gutting the entire thing. They just put simulators in for the O2 sensors so that it wouldn't throw a code. Also, down the road, the rest of it may break lose and rattle again.

I doubt the rest will break loose, I never even touched it, but I'm not looking at like the truck blowing up or anything am I?

It's alot easier to just pull the 2H02 out of the exhaust flow with spark plug defoulers. Been doing this for years on STI's and EVO's.

sounds too complicated lol, I'll probably just let it ride. I got half a catalytic converter in there, so at least I'm halfway legal lol

It takes 20 minutes and costs 5$ to do. Your making assumptions without doing any research.

You're right, wouldn't hurt to try it. Do I have to mess with the cat anymore to do that, or am I fine with it halfway full

Yes, when the rest of the brick breaks up (and it will), the pieces will go downstream to whatever is next, either another cat or the muffler. Usually, these pieces cause a massive flow restriction with resultant power loss and overheating.

Just make sure you only pull the 2H02 out of the flow, not the 1H02. The 2nd is for catalyst efficiency, and the 1st is for fuel trim adjustment.

The brick in the front of the cat looks just like it did from the factory, completely untouched, bc i couldn't reach it lol, so how would it break if it's never been touched? The cat's completely empty in the back half, and the front half looks brand new, and completely intact

If it's clogged you'll know. The engine has no net torque at higher RPM and EGT's go through the roof.

I'm new to the forum...and I'm looking for ways to improve the mileage/performance on my 2001 Ranger w/4.0L, and I'm just beggining to search through the forum. What is meant by "2HO2" in the above thread on catalytic converters?

You can get an aftermarket one. I have the same truck you do and my aftermarket was less than 50.00 at a local autoparts store
