01 and up trucks are live axle so you can go in and out of 4wd and drive in 4wd at any forward speed. 98 to 2000 trucks use hubs so I'm not sure if you can engage 4wd at any speed.

98-00 you have to be below 40mph to engage 4x4 high, have to stopped and in neutral to engage 4x4 low, thought it was about the same for all 4x4s

Nah. My manual says 4wd high can be engaged at any forward speed. I have tried while going 90 just to try and it had no problems going in.

My manual says not to shift into 4-high above 45 mph. If conditions are that bad that 4 wheel drive is required, you shouldn't be going that fast anyway. Of course, you can go faster than 45 once it's already engaged.

4 hi will work at any speed. However, you should be basing your speed on the road conditions, not if your 4wd will engage. You can go 90mph in 4wd without breaking components. But when you go plowing into a barrier or kill a car load of kids, see if your 4wd helps you then.

^ What he said.

I actually drive slower in my 4x4 Ranger than I did with any of my previous 2wd cars.

The way I see it, 4wd adds safety and traction (if you drive appropriately). To speed or otherwise drive crazy in the snow simply because 4wd allows you to, is to waste the benefits of 4wd.

I like when people think that with 4wd they can drive as fast as they want in any condition.

That always makes it entertaining. I have a 4wd Ranger and a 2wd Sonoma. I went home to Washington last december and we had 14 inches of snow. Not common for Western Washington where I'm at. I finally dig my 2wd out of the drive way, I live on a hill so I just didn't try for a couple days to get it out cuz I had the Ranger, I take my Sonoma downtown Centralia, I pull up to the light and stop no problem. Soccer mom in the Suburban hauling ass pulls up and trys to stop, I cringed as I watched her slide right by me through the intersection and keep going. Then the cop saw her lol

I have about 8 inches of snow here, I have manual hubs now and I just leave them locked in. But before that when I had the autos in my 97 they would engage anytime under 45 mph. If you need 4wd on the fly and you are doing more than 45 you probably shouldn't be going anywhere near that fast.

just to kinda backup what richarddhoward said, i have manual hubs on mine too, if there's snow on the road or i know i'm heading for a situation where i might need 4x4, i lock em and just leave the t-case in 2wd, nothing wrong with driving with your hubs locked, it just hurts gas mileage a little bit

I've always said 4wd will help you go but will do nothing to help you stop. I love it when some jackazz in a big suv goes flying buy in a snow storm and then I pass him in the ditch a mile down the road.

Red face

Hi

I'm hoping all you experts out there can help.

What is the difference between 4L & 4H and in what conditions should the 4L or 4H be used?

What is RFW?

Many thanks
