Whistle/whine
Wasn't sure what section to put this in and did a search and didn't come up with much so.....
My truck has developed a whine/whistle lately and I'm not sure what it is. Sometimes it sounds like its coming from the front, sometimes the middle and sometimes the rear of the truck. So I don't don't know if its my stock airbox since I removed the silencer, or maybe the transmission or maybe the resonating tips I put on my dual exaust. Any ideas?

Re: Whistle/whine
Im still a believer in the plastic intake as the problem. Like when you blow over a pop bottle. All of my trucks have done it. It stopped on my 97 when I changed out the plastic intake for an aluminum one.....thats an extreme move to get away from it

Are you talking about the intake that sits on top of the engine, not the airbox or intake? If so, mine has an aluminum intake, I think it was one of the last year models before they switched to the plastic intakes.

Re: Whistle/whine
I did some checking and it sounds almost like its coming from the back of the engine. I stuck a long screw driver on top of the cam sync and the other end to my ear and could hear a whirring sound, I did that a bunch of times and sometimes it sounded louder than others, not sure if it was the angle of the screw driver or if its supposed to sound like that or if thats the sound i'm hearing or what. I heard the same sound but quieter when I stuck the screw driver up to the iac, I cleaned the iac not too long ago.

Re: Whistle/whine
I heard the sound again today when I got off work so I did some more listening and checking. I put the tip of a screw driver in the alternator and the other end to my ear and could hear the whistling sound really well, could the alternator be going bad?

Re: Whistle/whine
3.0's are known for chewing up cam syc's. Id check that causes a whine from back of the engine, Front of engine all my alternators have whined, and they all tested good, i think its just normal, also an old belt can cause that a whining too. I get a whining comeing from my AC compressor, which i have had in both of my rangers. Honestly i would change the belt (20-30 bucks) and check to make sure your cam sync is in 1 peice.

Ok, I checked the cps and the cam sync lastnight. The cps had some minor rust and the top of the cam sync had some as well. Cleaned the rust and took the cam sync out. Didn't notice any excessive wear or noises while turning it by hand.

Re: Whistle/whine
I took my belt off today and I could still hear the sound. Not sure what it is. May half to take it somewhere to see if someone else can figure it out

Re: Whistle/whine
Does it happen when you do something specific or just all the time?
