I never added any weight to my 1994 F150 for Michigan winters and never got stuck. I'm thinking about adding two bags of play sand to my new 09 Ranger for the winter.

If you fill it with water won't it still freeze? I'd go with the sand myself...

I checked with the lady while I was in Home Depot the other evening. She said they have been selling a lot of the tube sand. It's about 5.00/bag here in Ohio. It's on my shopping list for the weekend. they are talking about the possibilty of a couple inches of snow here in central Ohio this weekend.

I don't know about washer fluid but hey I'm not going to try it either. I have 4wd that has pulled me through anything I needed.

+1

While adding weight to the bed of a 4x4 isn't going to hurt anything (except your gas mileage), I have the hard tonneau on mine so I don't even have the weight of snow filling the bed in winter. We had a few really heavy snows last winter, and in 4wd, driving in 10" of snow was effortless.

It depends on snow to. Up here it's so cold that we get really powdery flakes. So I can do 2 ft of snow in four wheel no problem. Back home it's a lot more wet snow. So I don't take as deep because it acts kinda like mud and I'm not going to get stuck by being cautious. And usually when I'm traveling a great distance, say back to home 900 miles lol I have some weight in the back because I have a shovel, I usually put my spare in the bed for easier access, my chains, emergency gear, the tote of stuff I'm taking home, my roommate if he's being a dipshit etc, and the rest is usually full of snow lol

I got 5 40# Water softener salt in mine for weight, and seems to help out pretty good.. I do slip a little but not as bad when I didn't have it in.

Nice thing about the salt, I can use it up when comes spring, so nothing laying around getting beaten up as I've had in the past with sand bag.
