Im waiting to get a Mihandra diesel, about the same size as a Ranger. But double the fuel milage, about twice the towing capability. And less $$ than a Sport Trac http://www.mahindrana.com/

Mahindris are hideos! And how we build roads here is dependant on taxes. Washington builds them for 15 years, Montana, couldn't try for that if they wanted to. We also have a heavier traffic flow and large semis that roam around the country. My Dad worked for DOT and I asked him about it one day.

Also it was the 70s because of the OPEC nations being dumb that we got diesel cars that sucked. Mercedes made a great diesel then but they were stupid slow and had no power, GM made the 5.7 liter Diesel that was a pile, and I don't want to even mention opel.

id like to try out a mahindra myself, it sure looks good on paper! the only thing i dont care for is you can only get it with a automatic trans. i would prefer a manual. i think the biggest reason for not having a stateside ranger with a diesel is 1-customer demand, and 2-epa regs. a 200 cid inlline 4 would probly work for me. id like to get the crewcab version but with the longbed, doesnt seem to be a extended cab. (it would probly only be a shortbed anyhow)

A 1.6 engine is a bit small for a ranger, it'd have to have alot of complicated tech on it to get enough power to match a 2.5 or a 3.0 turbo diesel. I don't think I'd buy a vehicle the size of a ranger with a 1.6 diesel.

Ditto, and he lives with a diesel Ranger.

Yeah my engine is quite simple its the 2.5 Duratorq, SOHC, 12 valve turbo with intercooler. The Newer 2006+ ones have a TDCI, DOHC 16 valve common rail engine which gets better mpg but is more expensive to fix if anything goes wrong. A 1.6 would struggle especially towing.

Being a diesel tech and a gear head both those are simple enough for me to fix, but DOHC is definately a bitch no matter who you are. Does Ford make that diesel in house or do they shell it out to a different company like they do with the powerstroke diesel here?

What's the difference in mileage between the two engines?

So if I come over the pond do I get to test drive yours just to see how I like it? Lol jp jp

All the diesel rangers over here are built in the auto alliance factory in thailand which is owned by ford and mazda. The engine I got is also used in mazda vans but the newer one I think is only used in the rangers and mazda bt50 pick-ups.
I think the newer ones get about 30mpg compared to mine getting about 25mpg and they also got a bit more power but the 2009 versions have a weird front end.

And strangely enough the one pick up for sale in the UK with a proper ford engine is the Landrover Defender.

No he invented the compression ignition engine. Explain yourself because I think you have a point beyond what you are stating.

And Land Rover Defenders are awesome!

The new Powerstroke is in-house.

a source on another site i frequent says T6 is dead for the US.

F100 is more likely for the US market. No more Ranger and definately no diesels.

With the above quoted 25mpg for the diesel, it doesnt make sense if the Ecoboost 2.0L can make more power, and get comprable milage. The 2,0L Ecoboost is rumoured to be the base engine for the new unibody Explorer comine next year, and in concept car form it made 275hp. A production version should easily put out more power than the current 4.0L v6 while keeping economy with the 4 banger models. (in a hypothetical Ranger platform).

FWIW, heres the thread. Some good info in there, some speculation. One guy in there seems to get really good info and has been right about a bunch of future products. He tends to post in a very vauge pattern though and so far has been right about such things as the 5.0L Mustang and its HP ratings, and the 3.7 in the Mustang. Much more too so i believe him.

He says the T6 is dead elsewhere on the site and the Ranger is dead in the US as we know it.
