Default 95 ford ranger trouble

i have a 95 ford ranger that i just changed the head gasket on and it misses while at idle, oil gauge bounces around and blows black smoke and white smoke while at idle. second problem is when i start driving it runs fine for a bout two blocks when the oil gauge drops and check light is flashing, it starts blowing white smoke as if the head gasket was blown so i drive back home and let it idle and the white smoke go's away and it acts like normal so im clueless on what it could be. so if anyone can help me out id gladly appreciated

who did the headgasket? was the head decked? is it cracked was that looked at, did you get new head bolts. a puff a white could be from a valve stem seal.. your oil gauge only reads pressure or not it will not tell you if it changes 15 psi, so if you gauge is moving, options could be bad pump plugged oil passage bad sending unit bad wire or ground.

I changed the head gasket,the head was rebuilt with all new parts as far as the grounds go where are the main grounds located? want to make sure I didn't miss one and thanks for the help

did you make sure all the ports were open? a friend of mine did a 460 once and there was a hole in the gasket that had not been opened in the new gasket blocking an oil port. may be worth thinking about?

i checked the gasket and all the holes where open did i really need to change the bolts that hold the down the manual didn't say anything about changing them

thanks 98blownranger you where wright about the ground and i figured out that the camshaft sensor wasn't hooked up so i screwed it on and now the motor runs fine but still have white smoke comming out at idle

i just saw my header was leaking water out of cylinder1 I'm guessing because i didn't use new bolts, can i install the new bolts one by one and still use the same gasket?just asking since im not removing the load all at once the the gasket should still be good right?

you dont need new bolts. bolts are bolts, old or new they are the same. it could be residue inside the cylinder from when you did have the blown head gasket. and for water coming out of the header means you did not seat the gasket properly

What are you talking about? Many head bolts are torque to a certain amount and then actually turned past that to stretch the bolt. I would always change the head bolts if I did a head-job. On my car I actually replaced the bolts with studs and used nuts and washers to help hold the head down for increased boost levels. Studs work much better for higher clamp loads compared to bolts.

head bolts are a one time use bolt. header bolts can be reused, main motor ground is on teh backside of the drivers side head to firewall, head may of been rebuilt but was it deack or checked for flatness?

well i have done a lot of work the engine of my 86 and have never replaced them. it still runs fine. i have replaced the 4 years ago then the head 2 years ago. then the cylinder block and pistons last year.

It does sounds like the head bolts weren't tightened enough. Head bolts do usually need quite a lot of torque to get the gasket to seal properly. Either that, or as someone said earlier, there could be a crack in the head. Hairline cracks can often go unnoticed.

I've changed many, many head gaskets on motorcycles, even full rebuilds, and have never had to replace the head bolts/studs. The only studs I've had to replace on a motorcycle engine are for the exhaust manifold, as they can rust up pretty darn quick.
