Default Snow wheeling!

What's your best and worst snow wheeling incident? They can be on the road as long as you were in 4wd.

I just got back from the "mountains" here, (I live on a hill bigger than the so called mountains they have here on the plains) We had a ball wheeling around and I showed up my buddies lifted Toyota with a locker, so I'd have to say other than with my old k5 that was the best.

Worst: I was headed back to school from Spokane and all the passes were killer. I got to Mcdonald Pass on highway 12 outside of Helena, I hit ice doing 35 and slid sideways with cars coming, I got it back in line and kept driving, then a semi in front of me lost control of its trailer and it swung out, I crossed into the far lane because I couldn't stop as I was trying to pass him when it happened, luckily no one was coming, then got into Helena, the ice was making everyone slide. I called my Dad, I was still 190 miles from school and things were getting bad. Road report was shi--y to damn near impossible. I grabbed a six pack and some dinner and checked in at the hotel. Made the rest of the trip the next day.

Now what are yours?

Only one that comes to mind is my basically all bone stock '01 ranger with a tiny torsion crank and near new 31's with open differentials...ALWAYS getting itself high centered in the ruts. Wheelin' with friends on 38's and solid axles FTW! lol. Later that night, I got to tug a 1 ton chevy out the ditch!

I think I got a pic...but I don't have it on this computer. Think it's on my dad's.

EDIT: OH! This one was awesome. Alright...this time on 32" Bfg muds aired down. Guy I was following in his Yota on 35's and locked front and rear decided to play in a ditch on the side of the road......mid way up a hill. Not a good thing for ice. I couldn't get back going because I slowed down for him....4th gear spinning tires standing still. LOL. I backed all the way down the hill and made a good run at it. For some reason, I only had 2wd I think. lol.

My best snow story was pulling a Dodge Dakota out of the snow. Then the guy saying must be nice to have 4wd and I replied I wouldn't know.

haha priceless right there!

Lets see...first time I went snow wheeling I almost slid off the side mountain 3 times. The first and last time were at the same spot, once going up hill the other downhill. That was back in stock form.

The second time was maybe a month later, but I had upgraded to some BFG A/Ts. Did a night run with 3 other Rangers. 2 2wds with L/S and 2 4x4s, one had bald tires. We made who knows how far and had to turn around. Around 7 or 8 AM we were stuck at this one corner and I was the only one who could make it up. We ended up putting my snow cables on my truck and then having to hook up 2 tow straps to each of the other trucks and pulling them about .5-1 mile up the trail to get to a point where we could drive the rest of the way without getting stuck.

Here are a few pics from that night, oh our fearless leader Tom was one of the trucks there that night too.

Here is where everyone was getting stuck:

Talking Ahh...Old Guy and snow stories!

My first Ranger and my first 4x. Back in '87 I was cruisin' out in the Cascades, gonna play in me some snow. Got the kids and the wife in my shiny new supercab, stock everything. Me, well, I'd read a couple of 4 wheeler magazines and I had a truck, with....4 WHEEL DRIVE....I could do just about anything. Got up to the snow level but it wasn't enough to let the kids play in, so's dads gotta find the deep stuff. We lock in the hubs and turn up the fire road. A little slippin' a lotta fun. But it still ain't deep enough. I'm in 4x high just toodlin' along noticin' it's just about deep enough (it was about 18", I found out later). It was time to find a place to let out the little ones, certainly by the next switch back there'd be enough room to turn around and let the boys play some. About that time I noticed I was leaving THREE ruts in the snow behind me (differential). I was in a straight stretch and the last place to turn around was about a hundred yards back and I was only 50 yards from the next corner. I decided to go ahead but the truck decided to go sideways. All 4 wheels broke loose at the same time and I slid right into the ditch. Which was really lucky cause the other side was clear cut mountainside. I was freakin' petrified, wife, kids, no shovel, chains, jack, rope, just a sled. Well I couldn't let'em all know how scared (and stupid) I was. I told 'em "it'll all be allright, I don't even have it in low". I calmly reached down and slid the lever to low, told my boys to hold on cause we had to back down the road. And I'll be go to hell thats what it did. I had to rock it once when it crawled up the bank but when we got to the corner, she pulled right to the center of the road and thats where I parked her while they played in the snow and I tried not to cry over the first scratches I put in my truck. God, I loved that truck, '86 supercab 4x, shortbed, 2.9, dual tanks. The wife got it in the divorce, well she forged my signature on the title and traded for a Toyota and there was only one payment left. Yeah, I'm still bitter...

One guy I know had just gotten his first 4x4, a '91 Isuzu Trooper. He had zero off-road experience and we wanted to try. This was probably early February and was starting to get warm and melt all the snow. In the woods, there was still a good 18 inches on the seasonal roads. We went with his Trooper, a '97 S10, and a 94 full size Chevy. Snowmobiles occasionally do down these trails as well so the center of the road was hard packed, while outside of the road was still soft. The small trucks were able to stay completely on the hard stuff, but the full-size was too wide and kept falling of one side into the soft stuff. It didn't matter to much to him cuz he actually knew how to wheel. The trooper driver however, did not and kept somehow falling off the hard snow and we kept having to shovel and push him back out. He just kept burying himself tryinig to get out. He didn't know when to stop and realize he was not going to get out on his own. We get farther into the woods and the snow is deeper and we decide that going any farther will be a bad idea, but there is nowhere to turn around because there were trees right on the edge of the woods. So we ended up backing up probably about a mile out to a clearing where we could turn around. And about 5 minutes before we decide to back out it starts to do the freezing rain thing. And a couple of us had to sit in the bed of the full-size to help him stay on the hard snow.

Well. Only had one real snow wheeling adventure so far.

Good:

I was out and about. Had just ran some errands (not fun). Decided to play around on some back roads. Had a blast and didn't even have to worry about getting stuck. Then I find a nice snowy road. Just my luck; it dead-ends. Keep in mind, this road had ditches on either side. Decided to throw a U-turn. "It'll make it", as the truck goes from one ditch to another. Ended up sliding down into the ditch on the opposite side. Tried rocking her, to no avail. Put it in 4-low, still didn't move. Got out and started shoveling. Bout 20 mins later, she was free. Drove home and had dinner.

Ahhhh the memories haha. I would have to say that trip makes for my best snow wheeling experience as well as my worst lol. All and all, after all the struggles and frustration and once we were able to get out of there and live another day it was a pretty fun experience. BTW, just FYI, you say there were 2 2WDs with L/S there, I don't have an L/S, I have an open diff.

Depends on what you want and what truck you have, I don't know anything about yours. Used axles could be cheaper and you can build them easily to what you want than just gears.
