Should I buy?
I went to the bank today to sign the papers on a base model reg cab work truck 06 GMC canyon for $7000. I backed out and decided to wait. When I got home, I got the shoppers guide and found this:
2006 ford ranger FX4 with 44,000 miles
4wd, power everything, blue, tow hitch, ok tires, no defects what so ever.
Asking $8500 Firm
Needs to sell bad to job loss and other vehicle payments.
Also admitted to it having been wrecked which right away threw me off. He has insurance and body shop papers to prove that it was all cab damage (tree falling) and no front end, rear end, motor or drivetrain.
I have always been a sceptic of fords, but have always liked the fx4's. I know this a biased "ranger" forum, but any thoughts are helpful.

CHEAP!! Get it. Seriously. That's probably what he owes on it and can't afford the payment anymore. I'd say go snatch that thing up!
Even though it was a dirty title, the guy was honest about it and has the papers to prove such. 44k for 8500 and a dirty title. I'd probably do it if I had plans to keep it til the wheels fall off. Trying to resell it might be a pain. Nothing wrong with it mechanically or structurally...probably just a cab swap and a paint job.

If it only suffered body damage, then yes, it's a fair price. I'd check it out.

I'll probably be a lone dissenter, I say let it pass. It's a good price for a previously damaged vehicle but you may never get your money back if you need to sell it because of its history. Its always going to be a problem with anyone who runs a carfax or equivilent. JMO

I agree, but I have no plans of selling it. I keep my trucks till the wheels fall off. It will never be an issue of resell unless it is for $500 20 years from now.
And it was only body damage. No wiring, mechanical, etc; - Factory cab swap was it with new glass.

I know the OP has already said he keeps his vehicles until "the wheels fall off", but you still have a very good point.

Test drive them both, inspect them both, buy whichever one you feel you will be happier owning.

I would get it, FX4's are the way to go. Price is good and if you are going to keep it a long time damage doesn't really enter into decision. I have a 2003 FX4 and just LOVE it!

Def a good price on the FX4. I'd say it's just like buying a handgun - if you try it out and like it, then get it.

It sounds like a good deal, but the real clincher will be when you drive it. if it fits you, then get it. But either way, I'd steer clear of the Canyon.
