Default Overdrive Question

Don't know if I have the right Forum for this but on a buddy's Ranger it seems that the truck is always in overdrive unless he hits the button on the turn signal lever. Does the overdrive default to 'on' every time the engine is started or is it the opposite?

My button is on the automatic gear shift lever but it's default mode is overdrive ON everytime you start the truck..

I meant to say auto shift lever, sorry. Does that mean if you are just putting around town you should reset the button so the overdrive is off? I was of the impression that overdrive is really only beneficial at highway speeds. I would think if you are doing stop/start driving having it in OD would be wrong. Maybe I am wrong.

No. Overdrive should always be on. You only disable it when you're, for example, towing a heavy load up a hill. This goes for everyt currently made vehicle on the planet basically. Leave it on.

That surprises me. I guess I am thinking back to the days when overdrive was another top gear with a more than 1:1 ratio. You would select it at highway speeds and it would drop the RPMs. Is this the same idea? Does it change the gearing as I mentioned above? Seems to me in the 'olden' days if I went into OD at a low speed the engine would balk.

dont know but if you push that button it hold all the gears a little longer it seems. (but this is only my feelings not fact!!) but i do notice it seems to wind up more in second and third

What engine do you have?

On my 4.0 I can be going up some pretty good hills and push the button and it takes off like a rocket (well not exactly) but it is a whole different truck.

You say you 'push' the button does that engage the OD or take it off?
