Winter Driving
Just wondering if anyone does anything special like adding extra weight in the bed of the truck. I've got an extend cab 4x4 4ltr 5sp auto with a ARE Camper Shell. Thanks, Dave

Re: Winter Driving
No? But you're probably talking about places with actual.... weather.
But when I took her up to the mountains last christmas, I had like 300 pounds in the bed over the wheels. That and Advancetrac helped a LOT. First time driving in snow, did excellently.

Re: Winter Driving
I had a 2wd last year, i had almost 400lbs of sand in the back and still got stuck. gotta love 2 feet of snow over night...i have a 4x4 this year (yes i did sell and buy another ranger in a year...get over it its my money xD) i plan to put 2 sand bags over the wheels so i don't have to use 4x4 all the time.
Your from GA...I wouldn't worry about the winter if i were you. up here in Wisconsin we get up to 3 feet at a time.. usually up to 10 feet over the winter. If i lived down south i would of kept my 2wd, ya'll got it easy down there lol

Re: Winter Driving
Canadian winters are a pain in the ass I throw a coupkle of sand bags in the back of my Ranger cause she is light in the ass end. And the way the city plows the streets I have to use both sand bags and 4x4 at the stop lights and now I am getting snow tires.

Re: Winter Driving
Like is being said it doesn't sound like you get much snow or cold weather so unsure if you'd need to do anything. The topper is already adding some weight in the back so it'll help a bit.
I hate winter/cold but I love winter driving with lots of snow. To make the most of it I weight the back with 265lbs and run some amazing snow tires / Bridgestone Blizzaks.

Re: Winter Driving
Well its still in the 30's at night where he lives. So I suppose it could snow once in a while. But I don't think he has a whole lot to worry about. I think his 4wd will be more than enough to get through a dusting of snow.

Re: Winter Driving
Liv ein Colorado, and have never even had to use the 4x4 since I have the camper shell on back, and I make it anywhere in the snow.

Re: Winter Driving
4x4 FTW. No need for weight in the back if you have it.

Re: Winter Driving
I throw about 6 sandbags in the back and have winter tires, but it can snow over 2 feet at a time here and the city is horrible for plowing our roads. That and a lot of our intersections are on hills... not a good thing.

Re: Winter Driving
You guys are funny. all your doing with 400lbs over the axle is loosing MPGS.
Its been proved you only need about 40 lbs over each wheel to get the most traction your going to need.
I don't carry any weight, won't need to if you have 4wd.
