Unhappy Gas Leak from tank?

Hey,
My 97 Ranger xcab, 4x4, V6 has 56k miles. I started noticing a gas smell on fill-up. I finally got under the truck and can see gas running down the side of the tank. Anyone else had this problem? I'm running down the gas so I can drop the tank and figure it out.

Thanks for your help,
Al

Probably the filler neck. You can pick them up on ebay for under 60 bucks. It's easiest to pull the bed off to replace it too.

So, what happens to the neck? Does it split and leak or does the gasket at the tank leak? Just wondering....

The "rubber" splits around the tank neck. My 96 had the same problem. really poor design by Ford. The replacement from Ford was $200 + .
Some guys tried using a radiator hose but the gas would eat the rubber hose and the melted hose would go into the tank and eventually mess up the fuel pump. The traacer was correct, pull the bed back when you replace it. Much easier than dropping the tank.

I stopped by the local ford dealer during my running around today. The part was $414. I was shocked. Is it hard to get the bed off? I've never done that before.

THe bed bolts are a t55, just make sure before you attempt it that you spray the hell out of them with some wd40 or pb a good day before you plan on trying to loosen them. A nice long breaker bar will also be very handy and a extra set of hands to pull the bed off. I did mine solo and taking the bed off the frame myself was quite the challenge.
