ok guys im new to this site. but i have a 98 ford ranger xlt. runs good . but when you drive it , sometimes it shuts off. but when you turn the key back to off position then back on . it goes again, i cant figure the problem out. i tried injector cleaner, and still the same problem. so today i went and had the fuel filter changed and also still the same problem. any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated thanks guys. also the truck has the 2.5 4cyl in it w/8 spark plugs. i seen this today and also thought was weird. thanks again Jerry PLZ help.

just cause it can sit and run doesn't mean its not the pump

when its idling there is no load on the pump.....put a load on it (drive it)and it might shudder.

i need a little more info to work with....

does it have a high idle? (above 1000 rpms)
does it shudder after rapid acceleration? (stop and go traffic)

You post like a mad man! Welcome to the FRF

He actually may have two banks. On some diesel inlines they have bank one or the front bank that is the first 2,3,4 cylinders depending on the number of cylinders the engine has and the second or rear bank is the last half of the cylinders.

As for your problem FORD, questions:

Does it throw a code when it shuts off?
Have you done any major work to the truck lately that may have dealt with electronics?
Does it shut off at any particular time more than others? like getting off the freeway, just climbed a hill, when its cold, when its warm, when the weathers cold or warm etc

i would first check the IAC motor.

they are notorious for going bad.

mine used to shudder really bad after a hard acceleration but not bad enough to were it would stop running....
i just took off my IAC motor and sprayed it with carb cleaner. hasn't happened since.

but if you're not throwing a code, i'd say check your vacuum lines first.
a popped off or cracked hose could easily cause it to shudder at idle.
