tow or not to tow
ok i have like a bunch of trailers i am looking to buy or trade for and was wondering what you all think i could pull with my truck (09 reg cab 2.3 and 4,10 gears).
i have several one Axel trailers that i could get all about the same size 8' box and weight is about 600 lbs. but the one i like the most is a 8' box all enclosed and weight is a little over 1000 lbs with surge breaks or electric brand new! the trailer sales guy will say anything to get my money. so i come to you and ask who has a trailer, who pulls on a regular bases, and last but most important is how well dose your truck pull a trailer?
i thinking of getting one to pull all my toys quad,dirt bikes, camping gear, and every so often a load of wood from woods to my fire place any help are welcome and thanks for your help in this matter

Just check your manual for towing capacity but if you have a manual transmission it won't be much. I'd say no more than 2000 lbs for a manual Ranger. You will need a trailer brake controller. Also CA law is that you need trailer brakes for anything over 1500 lbs.

since you've got a 4cyl and 4.10's, I assume auto? all I can say is its gonna suck....but still better than a manual. lol.
I tow 3500lbs every now and again...of course, I've got a real hitch and have the 4.0. It aint that bad and that's almost at max capacity for my truck(stupid weak ass manual trans and components).
Just so you know...that rear bumper is rated at 200tongue, 2000 gross. Get a real hitch if you don't have one already. As said above, check the trucks specs for tow ratings.

if you don't have a "Reese" hitch on the truck i wouldn't even try the enclosed trailer on a stock bumper, it may be ok empty but i still wouldn't take the chance myself.

any brand hitch bolted directly to the frame that has the class 3 rating or better is what i was referring to yes fx4wannabe. i prefer the 2" receiver over the smaller one but that's personal taste.

Yes, the manual trans is rated for a lower towing capacity than the auto.
But it's not that you can't tow as much.
From what I've heard on the forums, Ford is basically covering their butt by rating it lower because average Joe can't make whatever necessary adjustments to driving/shifting style are needed while towing a load. So I guess if you know what you're doing, you can safely disregard the lower tow rating of the manual trans.
I have ZERO experience towing anything with a stick, so I'm not speaking from personal experience, just what I've heard.

I have also heard that Ford was covering their butt but I have also heard the drivetrain is just plain weak. The trans was used in something else and that vehicle had tranny problems as well. Maybe older F150 or something. I'm not sure. I wouldn't tow anything serious with my truck. It can barely haul itself around without breaking something or leaking.

The clutch system is weak and the gearing in the trans isn't made to handle much weight/load. I did 4000 once when I was stock on 31's and 4.10's and it was just too much for the truck for to handle. It isn't driving it that was a pain or too hard on the truck...it was getting the thing moving. Just didn't have enough gear in the axles or the trans in 1st. And I used to daily drive a gas 150 with a 15' trailer with an excavator on it without any issues.
Oh....I'm on trans #3 btw...internally they're weak too.

Yes. I used wheel my truck every weekend and I used to drive it hard. Stuff failed but no problem since I drove it hard. Now I drive nice and the only dirt it sees is when I park it at a OHV area to unload my quad. It still breaks down even when I drive it nice. Not cool.

2wds can tow more than 4wds also, i've hauled a 24' center console boat with my truck, it was really sagging in the back but it managed. also, ive towed a 15' boat regularly that weighed around 1000# plus like 400# of gear for it, it towed that like a champ. but we dont have any hills in florida so i dont know how it would do with hills
