The best way to drive a manual is to use your road speed to match the terrain and weather conditions. I usually downshift quite a bit, I just watch my tachometer and make sure the rpms don't get too high. In intercity driving I usually have it neutral so I don't have to hold the clutch all of the time. Plus it helps me to do that because of my bad left knee. plus downshifting and upshifting can really save you alot money concerning the brakes and in certain weather conditions could possibly save your life as well.
