itll be hard to get into gear. sometimes youll start losing fluid. most of the time youll lose pressure in the pedal.

oo well it is hard to get it into 1st sometimes and it will hardly ever go into reverse without a little persuation (jamming it back down into reverse). i have to let the clutch out a little to get it to go into reverse

It's the damn frenchies fault! LOL. The part is made in france for Ford, the replacements I've put in were made in france too. It's a poorly designed part that Ford has no intention to update. On alot of other models, it's located on the outside of the transmission and it pivots a fork like on old cable and rod clutches. But on the Ranger and F150, it's located inside the bellhousing. To replace it, you've gotta drop the transmission.

What it does is it uses hydraulic fluid(brake fluid) to push on the pressure plate 'fingers' to disengage the clutch disc from the friction surfaces(pressure plate and flywheel). I may have butchered the operation, if so, let me know. lol

Here's what it looks like...

Caution, I'm long-winded....

Oh man....this is really really bad! I've always owned an older F100 or F150 and never, ever had a problem with the cable or hydraulic clutches. I sold my old blue '94 F150 stick to buy a Ranger as a commuter and save gas January 2010. I've done myself all the typical things that have failed on me at 100k miles (DPFE thing, MAF sensor, speed sensor, belt, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket etc... and even had a guy replace the Rear main seal over a year ago) but this clutch has been nothing but trouble over the last year!!--and I really dont' want to put a bunch of $ into my commuter vehicle...uggg...

My clutch would work in warmer weather (not a peep btw June and October 2010, but as soon as turned cold in November, same old issue--wouldn't go into gear. I bled it a few times and the last time it wouldn't bleed and I lost all clutch operation! Didn't have the time to mess with and took it to Ford a month and a half ago. Ford says, Master Cylinder is bad and "we used to service this truck when the last owner had it." They said that the slave and discs were fine. Three days and $250 later picked up the the truck and the clutch was Perfect! two weeks ago clutch became unbearable again. Sometimes, the clutch pedal has 5" of slop and it requires pumping to go into the biggest 2 gears (1st and R) and other times the pedal has almost no slop and it shifts perfectly.

I kinda want to sell the truck, but selling would not be worth my while with a crappy clutch. Curse of the Slave Cylinder? Ford swore up and down that the slave was fine.

If I ever meet the guy that thought an internal slave was a fantastic idea on the Ranger, I will beat him senseless and then make him drop the tranny and replace one. Then do it all over again. And maybe a 3rd time just to prove my point.

Napa's slaves are complete junk. I've gotten just over a year out of them (long enough for the warranty to expire).

Ford's are a bit better, having usually gotten 5 years out of them. I make it a habit now to change out the slave any time I need to drop the tranny since it's a time bomb.
