Question Trans cooler question

I have a 91 ford ranger 2.3 ,2wd, a4ld auto trans. This summer I was reading a TSB and it said my trans cooler might be to small, long story short, I was having tranny problems at that time , So I replaced it with one at least 2 times larger,( it was the only one they had). I was also reading somewhere that in the winter I may want to cover about half of the cooler, because the fluid might thicken up to much. I had called an auto parts place and he said that I should'nt have to cover it at all.
I thought I'd better be safe than sorry, and see if anyone here may know better.

So long as you are still running threw the radiator as well as the transmission cooler, it will be OK.
It will take a little longer for the tranny fluid to warm up, so the shifting may be a little sluggish.

Default re-how cold

I'm in Michigan , the winters get about 20 to 0 degrees fah, times that by some wind chills plus a clutch fan and a large trans cooler, but it does go through the rad also.

When the temperature gets to 20* or lower range you should have protection in front of your radiator anyway. That will allow the engine to reach temp quicker and it will run better as well as get a small increase in fuel economy.
A piece of cardboard does ok, but looks like crap, I see a zip up item on many of the diesel trucks here that is snapped to the grill and can be adjusted by zipping it up or down according to the temperature.
But , where I live, below 0* is not that common till you get up in elevation. If we do get down to 0* it only lasts a few days and most people just stuff cardboard in front of the radiator till the cold snap passes.
