Default Touching up paint tips

Hey guys,
On the truck I just bought, use to have a topper on it, and the paint around the top of the bed is worn down to the medal. I am going to touch up the paint because in Wisconsin bare medal rusts really quick, so can any one give me some tips for touching up the paint that's bare medal? Like sand it before you paint or something along those lines. Thanks in advance

Edit:
Quick Question would Bend rail work on my truck with the tool box? If you Look on the Passengers side towards the back, the side of the bed is bent.

(P.S. the black out is because i got them off the dealers site, My cameras broken, ill get better pics when i get use of another camera)

How much would all that cost? And can I pick it up at an auto parts store? I just wanted to try and protect the medal as much as I can. I'm not repainting the whole truck, just the top of the bed and tail gate.

Or you could get some DIY roll on bedliner to put on the rails and top of tailgate...

^this.
i tried the touch up pens. i did it exactly as the directions say, and the shit didnt blend right. plus the topper just peeled it right off.
the back glass wore the tailgate down to the metal and i even tried it on there and got it to blend some, but not all the way. then when this heat wave came, the seal kept sticking to the clear coat and peeling off the seal. so i said screw it and taped it off, sanded, and added bed liner. looks a lot better. the seal on the window still sticks to it, but i think its just the heat/bad seal.

If possible could some post a pic of what their truck looks like with the bed cover on the edges if the bed and tail gates? Same with the caps? I have a few months before it'll start snowing, so I could save up to do some like this if it looks good

Not bad, I won't have a topper, I'm basically looking to protect the bed of the truck from the elements, once I get money, probably do the whole bed
