Auto trans stronger than manual...
Now, is it just that the auto can tow a lot more or is it also more durable than the manual trans?

its an arguable topic,
both can be durable, its just the auto tends to weigh more.

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
It's definitely a hard to prove argument. My old '00 Ranger had 189K on the original 4R44E, and that truck was used to pull loaded horse trailers around the farm, and occasional fun in the woods. It had just started to slip and jolt before I wrecked it.

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
the weak factor in the manual trans is the clutch.

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
Im sure their are many cases where a FWD auto can be built up and handle a bunch of power, but that wouldnt make sense because FWD sucks.

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
I have to say that the manual has got to be the better trans. My 5r55e went out at
135k. But, I think that manuals are designed to fail from the factory. They put ATF in them. WTF!

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
I think saying the auto is stronger than a straight shift is a little bit of a stretch. Now when it comes to reliability, I think the auto has an edge......that is as long as any factory quirks are repaired and it is serviced regularly. Over the road trucks have primarily used straight shift transmissions for a very long time and they pull some serious loads. They also require very regular maintainance and repairs. Ask me how I know. I've turned wrenches a long time and that's included some heavy truck repair. Just use Chrysler as an example. With only a few basic mods, the 727 Torqueflite can handle 1000 HP and 1000 LB FT of torque. An A833 would have trouble with that, even moded, because as noted above, the clutch would be the weak spot. Also, I don't care if you're Ronnie Sox reincarnated, you cannot outshift a properly prepared automatic.

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
the ranger manual transmissions are in fact weaker than there auto counterpart especially if you tow alot with it. each trans has there pros and cons but as far as strength the auto has it.

I thought that an automatics "clutch" was the torque converter.

the torque converter builds up torque to help get the vehicle moving

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
it is an arguable topic, both will not take a lot of punishment.. but both can be upgraded. it wld cost way more to make an auto bullet proof.. as for the manual, wld require only input and output shaft bearing upgrades..

Re: Auto trans stronger than manual...
There is a letter in this month's Four Wheeler magazine that goes over this topic. Four Wheeler had originally said that the weak link in '93+ Rangers is the manual transmissions, but a guy wrote in with another argument saying the manuals are better or something like that.

Yes, that is the reason.
At launch, the torque converter nearly doubles the engine's input torque to the transmission. By contrast, the clutch throws part of the input torque away as heat as it is slipped to get moving.
Starting uphill from a dead stop with a loaded trailer is far easier with an automatic than with a manual. Once they are moving, they are roughly equal.
The automatic is rated to tow more because of its ability to launch better. It's just that simple.

Puzackly. Great comparison. That's because unlike the clutch, the torque converter is never disengaged from the transmission.
