Default 1988 Ford Ranger, prepare me for the winter?

I bought three 70 pound sandbags this morning... but I feel like I need more? How much weight should be in the back of a truck like mine.

Also, how do I get into four wheel drive? Which way do I turn the dials on the hub caps? And what should my shifter be on (the 4WD shifter)

turn hub toward lock in should be an arrow showing direction if not turn toward rear of truck.shifter should be in high for road use not to exceed 45mph.180 to 200lbs should be sufficient weight.Make sure to add antifreeze and good tread on all 4tires
