Default 2001 ford ranger valve problem?

Hi, the other day I was driving home and i heard a loud tapping coming from my engine. When I popped the hood I found that the noise is coming from the drivers side front. I can feel somthing hitting the valve cover. Does this mean that the valve is bad? Or does it just need to be adjusted? And ideas on what this would be?

the valve is hydraulic, there is no adjustment..

Ok.. 2 thigns to do..
first, change oil filter to a quality brand, Wix, Purolator/Motorcraft, K&N, etc... NO FRAM!

2nd, there's an additive for the oil called Valve Medic, made by Gunk. pour that in (preferable with clean oil), and drive. within 200 miles, it'll work. there's another additive called Rislone, what will work also, but I trust the valve medic moreso..

sounds like a spring, retainer, or keeper broke. pull the valve cover off. you should see the problem

Default Valve tapping

my 2002 ranger 3.0 starts tapping once its warmed up. It just started one day as I was driving under normal conditions. I haven't been able to tell for sure if its corresponding with my gear shifts or if it is for sure with my engine revving. BUT... has anyone had this problem and tracked to to even the flexplate on the transmission hitting something? when i first got the truck used there was a tiny noise that when I pushed the clutch down just a bit it would go away. BUT...I am thinking it has to be a valvetrain issue which would stink, but repairable as long as thats all it is. The trouble is I am used to working on my 1973 Cougar valvetrain, but not this!

Default Valve tapping

Not yet. Tomorrow I will take it to be diagnosed. it strange because the engine is still running almost perfectly smooth in idle and cruising. But I guess the computer is preventing that area from firing. There is no check engine light and I thought there would be a sensor for that.
