Question Towing Question (can this be done?)

Hey everyone...my girlfriend just bought a 1973 Chevy Nova hatchback with the 5.7l 350 small in it (yea...my girlfriend). I live in Maryland and have a very generous uncle who lives in Jacksonville FL that owns his own restoration shop and wants to work on the car for us. I have the 06 4x4 3.0L V6 XLT.... the Nova shows to be between 2,000 and 2,243 lbs so ill be safe and say its 2,400 lbs..plus the trailer weight of 2,000 lbs....so I want to tow 4,400 lbs. Can I do this? My uncle says I should be ok and when I do research I only get mixed answers. I would get a class 3 tow hitch and a ball mount rated at 5,000 lbs. Thanks for reading hope someone can give me a sure answer!

You could probably do it just fine.. make sure you have a break controller and trailer brakes.

i wouldnt recomend it. i tow a 2000lbs worth of atvs and my engine struggles. the issue prolly wouldnt be with the weight itself but your truck will have a hard time if you go up any sort of hills

I've got an 02 4.0 with 4.10's and all that good stuff and I've pulled waaaayyy more so I'd say your pretty safe.

My buddy has a 3.0 and has pulled 5700 lbs with it no problem. Just have to be careful of course, leave a lot of room and you should be just fine.

Your engine is going to have to work extra hard to get through the Apps or the Smokeys (depending on your route.) I would say a 4.0 would be fine but it's pushing it with the 3.0.
You'd probably make it but that's a lot of wear and tear on the engine.

The only good thing about hauling long distances is it really burns out all the gunk build up everywhere. Hauled a small uhaul from Kissimmee, Florida to Indiana with my 3.0 V6 and truck ran better than ever afterwards.

Installing a 5000 lb receiver does NOT mean your truck is equiped to tow 5000 lbs. towing capacity depends on (according to the ford manual) - engine size, gear ratio, 4x2 or 4x4 and regular or super cab.

You could tow the car four down if you don't put much in the truck.
Did you read the other towing threads?

Yes you are right they won't rent to Rangers, had to pick it up with a different truck but bit the bullet and did it anyways, lol.

By the table above, 3.0, regular cab, with 4X4... You're pretty much done man. If you can get it down to 2,320 pounds of towing weight, you'll be ok but only if you have a 4.10:1 differential. If you have a manual transmission, you can bump that number up by another 20 pounds.
