Default Ranger question

Hi my name is Dave. I've been reading up on this site for some time but now i have a few questions.

So this may have been answered before (although i searched on this forum and didnt find my exact answer). I'm looking at getting a ranger within the next couple weeks. This is where i get stuck...

How underpowered is the 4cyl? Would you be able to break the rear wheels loose if you tried (with a 5speed)?

If i want to lower the ranger, is getting a pre 98 a bad idea or can i lower it slightly without getting new I-beams?

How useful is the extended cab? Can people (6' ~ 200 lbs) sit back there or is it just space for my backpack??

Lastly, is the ranger the right vehicle for me? I plan on lowering it a bit adding sway bars and the basic engine stuff to get some performance. It'll be a daily driver to work/skatepark/groceries/etc. As well as a vehicle to rip around in, take corners quickly and have general fun. The other vehicle Im looking at is a 240sx (not even similar) but its quite expensive/not practical.

i can tell you from experience that the extended cab is definitely worth it.. i fit 4 people in my truck.. we are all 6' 200+. It wasnt very comfortable.. but they were drunk and needed a ride.. you can fit one person back there pretty comfortably though.

I've owned both reg and ext cab. Go with the 4.0 if possible. The ext. cab is not a real big area. I'm 6 feet and I've sat back there before..it's not that bad for short drives around town.

The 2.3L is pretty underpowered. I stuck up for till i drove my dad's new jeep. It's just got nothing, Try to get a v6, preferably 4.0L.

Judging by what you want to do, an extended cab v6 should be a pretty good vehicle for ya. Just don't expect a huge increase on performance through add ons.

So any chance the 2.3L will break the rear wheels loose with a 5 speed? Also how about the lowering? I beams only or can i lower slightly with springs?

You can do plenty of 1 wheel tire fires with a 4 banger 5 speed and the lighter front end feels more balanced to me to turn into a lowered mini. The V6 feels pudgy in the front on a standard cab.

iBeams were only on 97 and below. 98+ are the same a-arms and coils as everything else out there. (no torsion bars to crank down like the old nissans though ......which cost $18 to lower for the u-bolts and blocks......lol)

to answer your breaking the tires loose question (this is a duratec 2.3, though)
Sorry, it was my first run there ever LOL i eventually got more consistent.
i've had several s12 200sx's and a s13 240sx and the ranger is far more practical and handles almost as well as the s13 with coils and some cheap ebay arms. the downside is that there arent as much performance options for the ranger. but i'd never look back.

in my 2.3, i can break loose VERY easily. Ive got l/s and its nice looking behind you after you peel out a little bit and looking at two stripes instead of one. if you're looking for fuel efficiency get a 4cyl, if youre looking for a ton of power get a 4.0.

IMO the Ranger is a really good "truck" but not a really good "sport truck" Op you should look for a 2001-'03 Toyota S-Runner if you want something that will handle & drive more like a sport truck.

Skip the non-four door supercab if you can, it's useless if the doors don't open. That was the only mistake I made and wish I had the four doors.

4.0L guys are going to say you get "tons" of power and that these trucks are fast etc.. truth betold all Rangers are slow IMO. I owned an '08 Nissan Frontier V6 4x4 Crew Cab, I blew 4.0L Rangers away all day long and I didn't even think the Frontier was all that. That said I drive a 2.3L Duratec with an Automatic today and it's pleanty of power for me but gas was more important to me than breaking tires lose and drag racing.
