Default 1998 ranger will not go in lo range

I was about to buy a 98 ranger, but when i put it in 4WD it will go in hi range but it will not even try to go into lo range at all. Any ideas what the problem could be? has any one ever had this problem? Thanks in advance.

You did put it into neutral when you tried to engage low range, correct?

did you have it in park? parking brake on?
i dont know what things have to be done in order for it to go into 4LO. I know on mine i have to be stopped, in neutral, and possibly parking brake on in order for it to lock in.

beat me to it lol

Put it in neutral with your foot applied to the break peddle and it shoud engage. You have to be in a complete stop first.

not the e brake. I just pop it into neutral and apply the brake at the same time and it goes right in to 4 low.
