Default Picked up a 1987 Ranger XLT FOR FREE!

1987
XLT
4 CYL 2.3L
5 SPD.

New:
Wheel bearings
brake lines,
tires,
clutch,
throw out bearing,
newer tranny,
axle seals,
new e-brake assembly,
rebuilt top end of motor.

The body is amazing, i have never seen a vehicle so old with no rot in the wheel wells, rockers, fenders, cab corners, NO RUST!!!

there are a few spots on the bed where the guy had rails on it, but its not an issue.

The BAD:

Needs a battery, tune up, wiper blades, shocks, and some exhaust work done, no biggie at all, if i cant do something i know people cheap.

The REALLY BAD:

The man parked it after the timing belt went in it, and the motor knocked.

He said it kept popping off timing belts??
and when we got it started today, it ran really rough and i can tell its either rod or main bearings most likely. the top end of the motor is new he told me, i dont know if i believe him but it was FREE!

my question, do you think its worth more to rebuild this engine, or find a junkyard one?

im trying to keep this as cheap as possible and me and a friend are doing all the work.

I think a jy one would be easier, but then again if the man is right and the top end is good, we could fix it and have a reliable engine.

more bad,

he said a couple times a year the lights just stop working, and it burns a porcelain plate in the switch? i tried the lights today and they dont work.

if you guys could give me some advice, id appreciate this, the body of this truck is amazing and i couldnt pass it up, the freaking floorboards are CLEAN! amazing consitering i live in the "rust belt" of the nation.

if i dont have enough cash to fix it, ill prolly offer it to some local memebrs 1st before if decide to junk it. interior is pretty clean other than a cracked dash from the sun.

THANKS GUYS

-Dave

Free is free! When I was in high school a buddy had one of these "back in it's day" in good shape and we BEAT that truck daily and it took it like a champ. I've loved them ever since. I especially love them in red with red interior and the chrome package. UBER sexy.

Have fun with it!

well, id love to do the v8 swap but two things are holding me back...

I want to save gas as my 4.0L is only getting me around 12-13 MPGS,

and i dont have the money for a new rear end and tranny to hold the power of a 5.0

^^that. Or maybe a turbo coupe swap? Although turbo swap could be expensive too. You will figure it all out. Good luck.

anyone know if the truck was ran on bad bearing for a while, is the motor still salvageable?

i called junkyards and they all want 700-900 dollars for an engine! for that money i can rebuilt it cheaper.

so, worst case senario if the bottom end is bad, do i just need a new crank and bearings?
