Default Is This Ranger Worth Buying?

That truck which is pictured..here are the specs..

1988 Ford Ranger Ext. Cab
2.9L V6
4X4
5 Speed Manual

Needs:

Speedo Repair-owner says rear clip will fix it
Rear Yoke Replaced-Guy says i can find one for 15 bucks at a scrapyard..

Paint like a MOFO..

He wants 350.00 for the truck and 50.00 to deliver it..

Grand Total:400.00 OTD with clean NC title..

Deal or No Deal? and how much is this gonna cost me to fix?

Well the biggest question is, does it run, and does it run well.

The guys stolen quite some stuff off a B2, possibly an accident, or really bad rust?

Everything electrical still work, if something in electrical goes, its a pita if you dont know where to look, or if the wires are part of a huge harness, Had that problem on my old ram.

Clutch? How many miles, and how many on that clutch, clutches arent expensive, but the install is what kills you. I dont know about you, but i feel safer leaving clutches to people who actually know what they are doing.

(Me, It would be sitting in my driveway right now, I want another project truck, or something i can just beat the shit out of. )

I would try to get the guy down a little, at least 350 delivered, if he has the rest of the interior parts, can get you the rear clip, and the yoke, then i would do $400.

And if you do get it, just rattle can that thing black...

guy drove it to work up until his other newer truck got fixed..3 weeks ago..passes inspecton..insurance recently removed...

and yes the B2 parts are due to rust to my understanding..plus from running it around 4 wheeling....

3 mo. old on the clutch..says you need to double clutch 4th..must have run it hard..

cranks and runs fine..mileage f'd due to speedo..

rear yoke....speedo clip...whats that gonna cost??

still..deal or no deal?

idk how much itd cost to do all those repairs tho but you only have to do the ones that require actual attention everything else can be done slowly

Id go for it, Im with eric, those year rangers are one of my favorites, and the 1st gens are easy to make look good. And if there isnt any bad rust on the body panels, you should be able to just bondo a bit, sand her down and paint.

Sounds like the syncro on 4th is bad, oh well, drive that shit like a big rig.

I dont know much about how much the thing for the speedo would be, who needs it, just go as fast as everyone else.

i dont want to see a perfectly good truck go to waste becuz some buster thought it would be funny to disrespect it and the memories that truck probably has...

but then again, i dont want to purchase a constant pain in my wallet..and yhea i know 400 bucks isnt much for alot of you, but thats 2 weeks pay for me...i gotta wait until the end of the month for another check just to have more cash..so its kinda like now or never on this truck..this deal could slip through my fingers if im not on the ball here...

im positive that with enough research "see: Cash", that i can get this baby running..that yoke scares me..i never delt with one..at least it doesnt need headgaskets..thank god for that..

if it makes u feel any better..i have no job and i would still jump on this

the yoke should be relatively easy to do and it is the only thing requiring immediate attension so buy it then recover and then work on everything else

Being that its an older ranger, it should be relatively inexpensive to fix, it looks like he did most of the hard work, like the body panels, clutch and etc.

Also just ask if he has any spare parts just laying around for it, could become useful later.
It also looks like it has b2 buckets and center consle, maybe you could trade the stock bench in the bed for the yoke and some other parts at the jy if you find one with another 1st gen

here are some have you questions?
-test driven it
-jacked her up checked everything out (frame!, leaks etc)
-tested the 4x4
-looked at the floor, make sure there is no holes/rust
-engine listned to her run, and when you first start her up try and smell the exhaust
-look at all the wiring under the hood. (buddy just bought a 91 4x4 same condition didnt
look and his truck caught fire a few days later)
-check the brakes, use them real good when test driving. can always double check the brake fluid before you test drive it while looking under the hood. Then look again after.
(bought a ranger someone put a nail in the rear brake line because there was a huge leak =D)
there is a lot more stuff you could look at but there are a few I would double check.
and most importent test her out, dont be afraid to put the 4x4 to work when you do.

body panels and paint should be the last of your concern, make sure shes physically sound =D. My 91 was worse then that and most of the money i spent went into the body, a few grand here and there.

It's a great find your not waisting a dime if she is sound. these little rangers all most go threw more shit and back then any person does in their life time. LOL!!

I appreciate everyone's input on this truck..i think im gonna buy it..and hope for the best..like any used car/truck deal..the owner isnt going to just give up every little detail if there is a major malfunction..luckily i believe i can fix this truck..

the 4x4 would be REALLY useful come winter..and the truck would look sexy in a flat black..

those buckets are a nice addition..i liked that he already did that..i would have done it too..he did alot of work that i would have already had to do..looks like its just fixing the nitpicky chit thats gonna be needed..

ill ask about the door panels..or i might just make my own..wouldnt be the first time..i had a regular cab 86 model before with the 4 cyl..my door panels looked sick..a little bit of wood and some speaker box carpet and im in business!!
ill talk to the guy some more and make sure im aware of everything possible..i wouldnt mind having that door panel and the parts needed...he acted like nothing was a big deal to fix...but then again of course he will act like that..he wants my money...lmao

no radio eithier..just noticed that in the pic..i gotta fix that or ill go crazy driving it..gotta haz tunes..

wonder if the A/C works?

-End Rant-

:-)
