Default check engine and erratic fuel gauge - 01 Ranger

Hi
New to the forum! I have had a 93 for a while, but just got a '01, 3.0 V6.

The first time I filled it with gas I had a heck of a time with the gas cap, but think I got it on tight. It didn't click, just couldn't get it any tighter.

Then, the check engine light came on. As as drove about 150 miles, I noticed the fuel gauge was still maxxed past full. Sometimes, when I start it, it shows around 1/2. When off, it is at full. Sometimes, it starts at around half then jumps up past full.

I tried the battery disconnect and that reset the light, and now the gauge seems to work every other time. Then the check engine light came back on.

I can tolerate the check engine light being on, but the errratic fuel gauge is not acceptable. I'll bring it into a shop, but any ideas what the deal is?

Thanks in advance for any help!
