Default Which would you rather have?

4-cyl or the 3.0? just curious to see if the Vulcan is hated more than a 4cyl, LOL. We all KNOW that the 4.0 V6, (push-rod or SOHC) is the preferred choice!

same HP yes, but the 3.0 has 26 more Ft Lbs.TQ. Wow, that doesn't sound like all that much more when you see it

I looked for months for an ext cab xlt with the 2.3 and manual transmission. They are too far and few between.
Finally settled on the '03 with 3.0 and Auto. I just bought. It was way too clean to pass on.
It's ok, but I feel my old '96 which had the old 2.3 and manual would take it in a stoplight race.

the 2.5 has better mpg than the 3.0 and the 2.3 according to my research. I don't need hp or tq since its just a daily driver, and my weekend car takes care of those departments. I wouldn't mind a 3.0 with a 5spd manual tranny just because my 2.5 with the 5spd manual has no pep in the step. Im not driving it in a agressive manor or racing, just daily use, when i push the pedal normally its slower than i assume the 3.0 would be.

If it was around 50-80 more. Then you could possibly persuade me

ive heard the lima's have lots of problems, i dont have any issues with my 3.0 at 82k miles and i feel it has enough horsepower for a daily driver im not a racer. But it does have fail gas mileage. I'm not a four banger fan because I hate the way the exhaust sounds and i gotta love flowmaster on my truck

no way, the Lima is a tank, sure you gotta do timing belts every so often and the 8 spark plugs are a PITA, but they were in production from 1974-2001, 5 years longer than the Vulcan was.

I have to go with the Vulcan for ease of repair. The 4 bangers are crammed in, and are very uncomfortable to work on. I thank god I never had to do any work on my old 2.5 Lima. I helped a fellow member here replace valve cover gaskets on his Duratec, and that was just a pain all the way around. Plus, the 3.0 is designed almost identical to the 302 in my dad's 87 F150, which is what I started learning about trucks on.

my dad had a '94 B2300 that he bought new, i would assume it was the lima engine? with a 5 speed stick and zero options, except dealer installed A/C. the thing was a TURD, no power whatsoever, at highway speeds he had to downshift into 4th to climb even a slight grade, and to make it up the mountian to my house you had to turn the a/c off to make the big hill, it sapped too much power from the engine! i've NEVER seen that on any other vehicle. on top of that, it failed to haul my dad's large toolbox to his new job in one trip ( took three), while the geo metro he had after the truck managed to haul the box in one trip... with one less cylinder!

on the other hand..... at the job he's been at for the last 6 years they have a few rangers, one has the DOHC 2.3 and a rebuilt auto trans, and it's snotty as hell, much quicker and better MPG's than the 3.0 trucks they have.

You are correct, it was a Lima four. I have a friend with a 96 or 97 (not exactly sure which) with the 2.3L/manual trans and he has to do that same thing, constantly downshifting in order to try to gain speed.
