Default POSSIBLE Ranger purchase! Help..

So I went truck shopping today around town and came across a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT. Its extended cab, silver, v6 (not sure if its 3.0 or 4.0), 5speed, 138k miles. It has some general wear and tear along the bed rails like you'd expect from a truck, but it also has a good sized dent in the passenger side, and the grill is broken (not bad, just one of the horizontal bars is broken).

Guy told me cash price is 4500 ... so I have a few questions.

1. Is it a good buy??
2. Would the dent and the grill be hard to fix??
3. How much do you think I could talk him down on the price??

THANKS for reading and helping.

I think he's a little bit crazy wanting that much for a truck with that many miles and visible body damage and at Max I wouldn't pay more than 3k. The grille wouldn't be too hard to just replace and would be whatever you can fid the grille for 30-100 dollars or so.

How do you know it's a V6? It sucks that Ford never put which engine the Ranger have on the side of them. but if it has a flex fuel badge (road & leaf) then you KNOW that it has the 3.0.

He told me it was the v6, he just didn't say which it was. I didn't look at it too long, I had somewhere I needed to be. I'm gonna go back and take a closer look next week..I might take some pics and post them here.

Good point. Sorry, I've never bought a vehicle before, so I'm kinda new at all this, lol.
But yeah, I figured I could hit up a junkyard, pull-a-part, ebay or somethin and find a grille.

Just wondering how it'd be to fix the body damage. Didn't get too good of a look at it.

I'm confused (as usual) in 2001, the ONLY ranger trucks that had horizontal bars on the grille were the 2wd 2.3 or 2.5 model. - the 4x4's all came with the "honeycomb style" grille. (all 3.0 and 4.0's had the honeycomb grille)
the seller say's it's a V6? - open the hood and on the center of the engine, the cover will say SOHC if it's a 4.0.

yes, the 4.0 SOHC is the best! 3.0 is commonly called a "3.Slow"

Was 01 sohc or ohv? Were there no xl or xlt models in 01 with the h grille or whatever?

Have the guy give you the vin and we can look up all of the information and options it came with from the factory.

No, 2wd & 4wd XL's and 2wd XLT's had the "horizontal" grille. 2wd & 4wd Edge's and Sport & 4WD XLT's had the honeycomb grille. Which engine a Ranger has nothing to do with what grille it came with from the factory. Unless of course, it's a Edge or Sport in which case, the 4-cyl was unavailable.

Anyway, if I were to guess sounds to me like a 2wd and most likely, has the 3.0L
