getting a newer ranger...what to get?
So I have two choices that I'm looking at...
1) 1997 ranger reg cab 230,000 km's on it, "mechanic owned"
$1500(CAD)
2) 1996 ranger reg cab 200,000 km's, new clutch $2000(CAD)
what would you get if it were up to you?
I'm kinda leaning towards the 96...
any thoughts?

checked out the 96 tonight, it's nice! drives well and is really clean. No rust. engine looks real clean as well.
I'm pretty impressed with this one, but I'll wait to check out the other one tomorrow.

Remember that a mechanics truck may be more problem because he was tired of working on trucks/cars and let his slide! A friend is a carpenter and does beautiful work but his wife can't get him to work on his own house! Welcome!

sounds like the 96 is getting the popular vote.
at that mileage (remember km's not miles) do the extra 30,000 make a difference? I see ALOT of rangers being sold at 220/230 (km's) what happens at that point to most rangers?

I choose the 96 not for the lower miles but because I wouldn't touch a mechanic owned one.

i must say from what i have seen the milage dont come in to play with that motor as long as you take care of it and dont thrash on it. and to concur, i wont touch a wrench monkeys truck even if ti was half the price but thats your call ( i dint even catch that first time i read the post)

So I claimed the 96, gonna pick it up tuesday. I'm pretty excited, but I can't get over the feeling somethings going to hoop out on this truck or any truck I buy . haha....Guess I'll wait and see.
Thanks for the tips guys especially regarding "mechanic owned" vehicles. I was all hyped because it seemed like such a good thing.

My dad was a mechanic from about 1920-1959, his rigs all ran good.
The reason for this, HE HAD ANOTHER MECHANIC WORK ON THEM, AND PAID TO HAVE IT DONE.
Never buy a car/truck from a mechanic unless you know he had mechanic doing the work on them, and he was paying to have it done!
