That's the same question I have but it's nice to know my Ranger is running normally. I've never seen a setup like this on another vehicle. Just one of the features of the Ranger I guess...

The AC runs on AC and defrost (and MAX in most) only. My 93's AC has started running all the time and I'm pretty sure it's the AC button on the HVAC panel. When the AC is running the clutch on the front of the compressor is engaged. You can tell by the front face of the clutch is spinning at the speed of the clutch. If that front face is stationary then the AC is deactivated.

If the AC is running all the time no matter what position the HVAC panel is set to then there is an electrical issue with the switch. We have a 2011 as a delivery truck at work and the AC runs only when it's supposed to.

As to fresh air all Rangers have a vent function to get fresh air. The issue is Ford put the fresh air ducts in a sucky place and you get engine air VS fresh air. lol

I'll ask the dealer about it when I drop it off to get the slider window installed then. The clutch is spinning in all modes except panel only and floor only settings.

That was only on the pre late 90's Rangers. Since then, it has always been as I described above where it operates in all settings except floor only and panel only.

The fresh air intake is right in front of the windshield, which is where it is on almost every vehicle on the road for the last 30+ years. It does not suck in engine air and it is the absolute best place for that intake. The inside air intake that is used in MAX AC is located behind the glove box.
