Default rearend slack

I appears I have a lot of rear end slack when putting the auto trans in gear especially in reverse. I have been told if I had the rear end shimmed that should take care of the problem. Has any had a problem with slack in the rear end and/or shimming it.
The rear end clunks (hits hard), again, more when going into reverse.
would like opinions on this problem.

I'm not sure why your particular truck does this, but I did notice my truck did something similar when I first got her. Immediately after lifting it (shackles) it seemed to go away. It may have had something to do with the angle?

Worn U-joints are a common cause of the symptons you describe.

Check that out first.

Disconnect the driveshaft at the rear dif. Turn the pinion by hand to see how much play there is.
While the shaft is down, check the u-joints and slip joint.
