Unhappy Oil leak under oil filter.

Hello, new to the forum, my friend recommended this to me after he had so much success fixing problems with his lexus by getting help from the lexus forum.

I have a new oil leak under my truck right where the oil filter and funnel looking thing are. It is maybe a dozen drops a day on the concrete. It is leaving traces of oil along the sway bar and the transmission where it mounts to the engine.

The bottom of the oil filter is wet with oil while the top is not. The drain plug is tight and does not seem to be leaking though it has oil on it too.

Please tell me it is not the rear main seal!

It is a 1999, six cylinder 3.0 flex fuel Ranger.

Thanks ahead of time for any help or ideas you may have with this issue.

No I am not sure its not leaking. The funnel thing is stock on the truck? Is it just to make changing the oil lesss messy?

I'm going to get the oil changed and have them check if the filter on it has a good seal or was messed up somehow.

Thanks for your reply!

Took it to a friend of mine's shop yesterday and he quoted $700 to fix the leak. He said it is like a seven hour job and he believes it is the oil pan gasket that is leaking. The forward oil pan sump and starter are covered with oil but the back sump is dry and the gasket looks fine.

I found a reference from another site that says the job is easy if you loosen the chassis bolts in the cab and engine bay areas (4 of them) and get the clearance to change out the gasket and do a remove and replace on the oil pump.

Ford says the engine and transmission have to be removed to replace the oil pan gasket.

Let me know if this is a job that is listed as difficult but can be shortened by lifting the body off the chassis to gain clearance. I've got the tools, but would hate to start lifting things and be still faced with removing the engine in the end.

Thanks!

it also could be leaking from the sending unit which is a easy easy fix and its a fairly cheap part i have a 2003 and it was like 19 bucks at napa if i was you i would put a new sending unit in it and then change the oil and make sure after your done changin the oil and your about to put the filter back on you make sure that the gasket came off with the oil filter or youll have a mess. and i found at walmart that 6 qt of motorcraft full synthetic oil is like 15 bucks so thats wat i would do buddy

Its Solved !!! all problems you all user blamed on wrong oil filter size, rear main seal ?, oil pan gaskets ? , etc while it leaks on all common driveway had black spots you notice when drive thur surbs. Wow i noticed it leaks from my own truck at first when purhased used car lot last 2 yrs ago. when i got truck, i cleaned around under of engine half bottom body where dirty oil dusted on , then changed oil and filter. drove around, check oil daily at first month was good. meanwhile few months away, noticed my truck leaks littles. i jacked truck up, removed starter, cop leak around oil filter. it had wets on filter after wipe papertowel around filter. but oil filter is not leak... i did look hard around top body of filter wall. i fingertip on engine body where oil leak is... feeling wet oily toward to oil dipstick tube!!! there is tube groove...... replace with old groove i found in moving box where few auto body things like 0 rings, grooves, etc. since remind me that i need to order oil dipstick tube groove or o ring either cuz i was looked on internet search for oil dipstick tube groove or o ring. there is no found !!! intersting ~~
