even with manual trans? I've read that the 4-cyl/Auto trans Escapes BARELY get better gas mileage than the 3.0's

Yep, the 3.0L Duratec was first used for the 1996 Taurus/Sable as a replacement for the 3.8L

Funny, isn't that the same 4-cyl in the late '01-'11 Rangers?

CND MPG

The 3L is rated at 25MPG city and 35 MPG Hway

the 2.5L Auto (haven found a manual yet) is rated at 28 MPG and 40 MPG highway.

you can get the 4.0L but the 4.6 is much better and we got hers at 29k it was a lease car and had 3k in miles on it when we got it last year. she gets 24MPG in town.

i dont think you can get an escape with a stick...and no the 4 cylinder in the escape is a 2.5 DOHC...the ranger is a 2.3 DOHC

You can have the 2,5L with a manual here in Canada

The early model of the Escape used the 2L until 2005 then switched to the 2.3L from the Mazda 3 series. In 2008, the Escape used the new 2.5L. The escape and ranger cannot share the same engine since the escape is front wheel drive and the ranger is rear wheel drive.
