Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
213750. Refreshed the engine since the trans had to come out for the dreaded leaking coolant neck on the 2.3NS.
The trans needed some sauce too, so rebuilt that as well.
BTW, if any of you have the 1L54 M5R1-HD trans, just a forewarning. The 2nd gear 3 piece synchro is expensive (250 or so) and I bought the last 1st gear synchro in existence.
Sorry in advance.

I don’t mean to scare you but that sounds like maybe main bearings (bright silver non-ferrous) or possibly valve guides (usually bronze colored). Does she burn oil?
You can have chemical analysis done on the oil/particles and get an estimate of which engine part(s) is failing.

Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
Yeah I was kinda worried it might be that. It's not burning oil yet. But there is some kind of fluttering noise with acceleration once rpms get close to 3k. It almost sounds like an exhaust leak but it is definitely coming from up front. A friend said it sounds like lifters (whatever that is). Once it shifts around 2800 to 3k rpms the fluttering stops. Maybe it is all connected somehow but I don't know a ton about cars. All I know is I need this thing to last me another few years to save up for the next truck. How long does it usually take for the engine to go once the bearings or valve guides start to wear like that? (I know it's different for every car but I'm just trying to get a general consensus)

Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
I dug up a picture I had on my phone of the glittery like material. It is not "ribbon like" or "splintery" it's just like small glittery flecks that feel gritty. Almost like sand.

Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
Hard to tell much from the photos. Best thing you can do is change the oil regularly with good quality oil and do a compression check. If you get low compression in one cylinder, squirt some oil into the spark plug hole and run that cylinder test again. If it improves dramatically it usually means bad rings, if it doesn’t improve it usually means valves or guides. Both will burn oil and both will leave metallic bits.
Bearings there is no way to tell without pulling the oil pan and bearing caps to inspect, which is a pretty invasive surgery; you’d need to be prepared for lower end rebuild if you find something bad.
To answer your other question generically, if it’s not burning oil and you have decent compression (within spec and even) then I’d change the oil and not worry about it.
If however it’s burning oil and you have lousy compression in one or more cylinders then you’re on borrowed time. Could be 500 miles, could be 5,000 or more.
I’ve driven clapped out oil burning cars with bad compression and shot rings for 5000+ miles before they blew up. And I’ve had others that died within a few hundred miles. Hard to predict.
Checking the compression is a bitch in the 4.0, but it’s the best way to get a sense of the health of the motor.

Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
My Ranger is a 1993 4x4 supercab, with Automatic transmission and a 4.0L engine.
Currently has just over 95,000 miles on the odometer.

Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
256,000 on my 2000 4 door Ranger. Original transmission and rear end. I had to replace the heads on the 3.0 and timing chain at 220,000 miles. 1 brother's '97 has 235,000, and my other brother's '98 Mazda B3000 has 201,000. Between the three of us, we own 8 Ford trucks. My 2 sons and my dad have another 5 Ford trucks.

Re: How many miles do you have on your Ranger?
I had 216,960 miles on my 2001. Had timing chain rattle. Since you have to pull the engine to replace the back chain on passenger side, I just had a Ford remanufactured engine dropped in. That was 2-11-17. Only have 3200 miles on new engine. *0 years old so don't drive it very far these days. Love my ranger. Bought it new and put all 217000 miles on it myself.
