Default '11 Ranger XLT, new owner

I posted a similar thread in the introduction forum but I have a question so I'm kinda repeating it here.

Looking for something more practical, I traded in my '06 Mazda MX5 (Miata) and just picked up my 2011 Ranger XLT 4X2 Supercab yesterday. I went with the 2.3 L and manual transmission. I'm trying to get the best fuel economy I can (I also own a '05 Dodge 4X4 Quad Cab with a Hemi for heavy work needs). I look forward to learning a lot from you more experienced owners here on the forum.

I already have a couple of things planned to do; I'm going to have a spray in bed liner applied and I also will have the driver and passenger windows tinted to the maximum the law allows.

Now to my question; one of the first things I noticed when I crawled into my new Ranger is the stick shift cover that comes from the floor all the way up to the shifter knob. Why did Ford designers think they had to make such a large and in my opinion ugly cover? I would have much preferred a small bellows at the floor and just having the shaft above that. Has anyone found a bellows replacement or found a way to modify the existing one? To me, instead of hiding the shaft of the shifter (Ford's intent with the large cover?) the existing cover just draws your attention to itself.

You could get an explorer center console. Its pretty easy to do from what i can tell, and there is a how to on here... I will go get it.

Thanks, I searched for mods about the shifter cover but the only thing I found was for putting in a center console. I have the 60/40 seats and didn't really want to change the seat so that won't work for me.

BTW, is the shifter knob screwed on or glued on on the 2011?

Welcome! My Ranger is similar to yours. I opted to get the drop in bedliner, at least for now. As for spray in, I hear LineX is as good or better than Rhino.

Thanks for the tip about the Hurst.

dixie_boysles; thanks for the tip on the shifter. I was hopeful that there was a boot instead of the entire shifter. I'm going to check into it though.

JesuSaves; I have a LineX in my Dodge and it's held up well. That is my intention for the Ranger.

Thats just stupid (not towards you but the site), most websites only go up to 2008 half the time anyway but everyone knows that the tranny hasnt changed in over a decade so it should bolt up the same wheter its an 2004 or 2011

Thanks for all the help, you people are great. I knew I joined this forum for a reason.

I'm liking the looks of the Hurst although the FX4 doesn't look too shabby either. Will I hear more gear whine in the cab with the shaft exposed? Is that one reason Ford decided to cover the entire shaft of the factory shifter?

Give me a tip on where I can pick up the Hurst the cheapest but still get good service. I'm not a cheap skate but I like to save money when I can.

Also, how does the FX4 compare to the Hurst with regards to build quality and performance?

dixie_boysles, Do you know if the boot in the pics a Hurst item?

The Hurst is a springloaded shifter, a bit different to use than your average shifter but a welcome change for me at least. There will be some noise, but its nothing to be concerned about

Can you give me a quick rundown on the difference of having a springload shifter.
