4 x 4? Like I said, 2wd snow tires and no weight in the back. It did a great job.

sometimes having chains is more important than having 4x4.

On really bad black ice, 4x4 means you're gonna have all your wheels spinning instead of just 1 or 2.

Before I became a 4x4 only guy I said the same things as the 2WD guys. Sure, you can add a bunch of weight in the bed, put chains on, carry traction mats and gear to get you unstuck, buy heavy lug snow tires, hone your skills and stay out of bad spots. But with 4x4 all I need to do is turn the switch and I can go pretty much anywhere, without getting out and slogging around in the muck.
The only gear I carry now is a tow strap for pulling out the 2WD guys.

definatly go 4x4 man. yes it is slightly more expensive, but snow tires on 4x2 will still be a pain in the ass. you will still be sliding everywhere. the 4x4 is an excellent investment man, go for 4x4.

on a side note, when you do get your ranger, check out the ontario meet thread. hopefully you can come out. here's the link OFFICIAL Ontario Meet Thread

^and that enables the 2wd guys to keep on wheeling! lol. Youre not convincing them to get a 4x4, youre convincing them to go wheeling with you in their 2wd's.

1st. I'm not here to start a fight but why are you going to add 100lbs. more weight if you had no problems getting around last winter?
2nd. Since I bought my 1st 4X4 in 2009 the 1 thing I never had to ask myself is am I going to make it.I have traveled out in the worst NW Pa has to offer and never regretted buying the 4X4.

okay but why try to convince the 2wd crowd that they made a mistake getting a 2wd without even looking at what they use their trucks for? that's retarded.

That's ok, it's worth the smug smile when I hand the tow strap out the window and sit in my warm comfy cab watching them slogging in the goo.
Plus, I never have to pay for beer.

No offense, but it's not retarded to give good advice when it's asked for. Helping each other out is what this forum is all about, yes?

Btw, driving around all winter with a lot of weight in the back probably uses more gas than putting it in 4x4 mode when needed... just sayin'...

I wasn't referring to the 2wd guys who are in all kinds of situations where a 4x4 would be ideal. Im talking in general about ppl who make blanket statements like "shoulda gotten a 4x4" to a person who, say, uses their 2wd truck for work on asfault in a warm region. Saying they need 4x4 when theyve already been doing what they do for years, is retarded.

Um, excuse me but the person who started this thread specifically stated he lives in a northern snow area and was asking for advice on which to get. If he lived in the southern US or Mexico and never went offroad the advice might be different.
Also, I didn't see anyone here say that "2wd trucks are pointless and worthless". The only insult I see here is you calling people "retarded" for trying to be helpful.

You are obviously a very smart guy who knows his trucks "limits", so you'll NEVER have to ask for a tow from a 4x4.

Right?

I read the whole damn thread. Yeah I got off topic alittle, but Ive had to listen to so many chumps (not here, but in person and elsewhere on the net) talk about 2wd trucks being pointless and their ignorance pissed me off. That's who I was calling retarded, not anyone here.
And your sarcasm at the end there is noted, thanks!

Anyway yeah I would tell the OP to get a 4x4 even if it means having to wait to save up more money. it'll be well worth the wait

No prob. If you're ever out this way I can show ya some gnarly trails, and don't worry I do carry that tow strap.

Just needlin' ya... no hard feelings.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for all the responses. Lots of very good points and a good discussion.

i had (now sitting dormant) a ' 93 Talon AWD turbo, drove it a little one winter before i turned it into a non winter driver because of the salt. That car was amazing in 6 inches of snow, felt like it was on rails and I could pull on anyone from a stop light.

I also had an '08 Sierra 4x4 for a year. That thing spun like crazy even in the rain. In 4x4 it was great.

i ended up getting a new Ranger 4x2 sport in silver with the limited slip diff. I tend to go over board with most of my purchases so I wanted to kind of not go crazy with this one ($4500 in options though might be a bit crazy though).

I probably will regret not getting the 4x4 option when we get the first snow fall but this vehicle was more a want than a need at this time so I had a hard time justifying the extra money for the 4x4. Time will tell.

Thanks again guys and I look forward to getting my truck Tuesday. I kind of have been missing my Sierra since I returned her last year. Hopefully the Ranger will fill the void.

Rob.
