you say that until you get stuck one good time and you wish there was a "badass mode" switch on your bezel to get you our. then all them savings you saved in gas just paid a tow truck to pull you out

Do you NEED a 4x4 in the snow? no. Will a 2wd get you by if you need it to? absolutely. Is a 4x4 superior to 2wd in the snow or any other low traction situation? Absolutely without a doubt it is and their should be no argument there. Op, by the truck you like and can afford, if it happens to be a 2wd then so be it. If you can afford a 4x4 and dont mind losing a couple MPG's to have the added traction than by all means, thats what I would do.

i was living in Northern Ontario all last winter and they get A LOT of snow... I carried some sand bags in the back and i didn't get stuck once all winter... and i was going out in the middle of a storm to play on the un plowed back roads plus i also drove my truck out on to frozen lake Temsikaming a few times... Maybe Canadians are just better drivers in the snow??? :P lol jokes aside, i do wish my truck was 4x4 but with a little skill, some good tires and weight in the back the 2wd does pretty dang good (especially if op is just in Toronto)

X2 on that. I am from timmins so I have an idea about what you are talking about, 2wd can farewell there. Heck my Dad had a 1990 Nissan Hardbody Pickup 2wd and he did what you did for 14 yrs and it worked.

I grew up in NE Pennsylvania and I used to be one of those guys who thought 2WD was adequate, until I started driving 4x4s. Now there's no way i would go back to all that slipping and sliding and getting stuck.
I had this same conversation with a friend in WI who was buying a Tacoma. He insisted on the 2WD because of fuel economy. After this last winter he admitted he made a HUGE mistake.
The difference in fuel economy is minimal when driving a 4WD in 2WD mode, and having that 4x4 capability when needed is invaluable. Better to have it than not, IMO.

to the 2wd guys who posted above me, do you have some kind of limited slip or locker that has helped you in the snow? Cuz if not, it's just 1wd. And with 1wd in Canada I have no idea how you got around anywhere in the winter.

By all means, purchase the 4X4!!!! You'll find yourself having fun in the snow...Remember that Rangers are always fun to drive regardless if 4X2 or 4X4..

once you own a 4x4, you never go back to a 4x2.
sort of like air conditioning. once you have it, you'll never go without it again.

If you are refering to me, I had just over 200lb at the tailgate and i have traction control, thats it.... I will probably add closer to 300 lbs for next winter

I had no problem in Michigan this year with 2wd, even with the cruddy tires i have on there i bucked some pretty serious snow. 4x4 is a nice luxury to have, but i don't think it's a necessity. i mean, look what they ran the Model T threw back in the day? I agree that you should get the truck that you like the most. If it's 2wd, as long as you have some good tires and weight and common sense, you should be alright. If it's a 4x4, you can come and pull me out of a ditch!
