Default Squeak from rear of motor?? What is it? HELP!

I have a squeak coming from the rear of my motor.

When I speed up, the squeak goes away. As I take my foot of the gas, the squeak comes back.

Seems to be worse when the motor is cold. As the truck warms up the squeak becomes less and less, but still there.

Also, it is a bit intermittent, but seems to be getting worse.

I checked the belt and all items on the belt (pulley's, alternator, etc.) and those items are not the issue.

Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Do a search. Its more than most likely the cam shaft synchronizer. Make sure you get a good replacement - motorcraft. Will cost a little over $100. Not to hard to change, do a search here, google, or youtube and you can find some how tos

Yep, sounds like the Camshaft Synchronizer. The bearings inside the synchronizer assembly are starting to fail, allowing the inner shaft to wobble, which is what is causing this squeaking or chirping sound.

Replaced the camshaft syncronizer like suggested and we're all good! Squeak gone and truck running fine! Found a youtube video explaining just how to do it and went slow. Job was easy.

Thanks for the good advice fordzilla and vegasranger!

Glad it's fixed! Words cannot describe how important it is to replace the camshaft synchronizer when it starts to chirp.

However, I have to ask, where did you get your synchronizer? Hopefully you picked it up from Ford. The synchronizers sold at Autozone, Advance Auto, etc have a pretty high failure rate, so if you picked up a cam sync that is not from Ford, then you aren't quite out of the water yet.

When i worked for yellow cab i bet i replaced at least 20 of them in one year. Granted this is like 2-300 cars that they had but still. If i did 20 and there was 4 other techs.... they go out after a while.

This was probably due to the shitty cars but once you hear it you know exactly what it is. Cool to hear you were able to swap it out.

Went with the Motorcraft syncro. A little more money, but I think it was worth it!!

Hi. My Ranger had also been chirping over a year ago but does not do it as much now. It also has a problem with the oil pressure gauge switching when idling after highway driving. Could both of these problems be the cam synchronizer?

Your original problem could have been a belt squeal, which then magically disappeared, and the cam sync issue popped up. Rarely ever can a squeaking cam sync last a year. They almost always gets worse rather than stay neutral. You should consider yourself lucky to have it last that long. And yes, the oil pressure readings could be because of the Cam Sync, however these trucks are also know for having flaky oil sending units. The easiest way you can tell if it's the cam sync is to start the truck when it is squeaking, and then look at the engine from the sides. If you're standing next to the driver's side front fender looking at the engine, the squeak should be at your right ear. If you're at the passenger side fender, the squeak should be at your left ear. Have you noticed any loss of power above 3k rpms?

There could be a loss of power but this is my first Ranger & I've had troubles ever since I got it about 2 years ago. The squeak is definitely from the rear. About a year ago I removed the cam sensor and poured some oil on the synchronizer and it seems to have quieted it down and it doesn't squeak very much at all. I know it wasn't a very professional thing to do but maybe that is why it has lasted this long. I'm going to replace the synchronizer in a couple of weeks. I don't want to risk my engine.

Have the same issue, however this is on a 4.0L XLT. Can't find any write ups on how to replace it on this motor, everything I see is for the 3.0... Any help here guys? it was diagnosed at a shop as the syncro assembly.. Would like to know if I can do this myself..
