Default Got rearended today at a light, should I be worried?

My 2011 2wd XLT Super cab got rear ended today at a traffic light. An ambulance came flying up behind us, everyone panicked to try and scoot over, well the girl behind me driving a Chrysler Sebring rammed the back of my brand new Ranger

I got out and looked, since I had my receiver hitch in the OEM trailer hitch I had zero damage, not even a scratch Oddly enough the front of her car was buckled pretty bad, huge hole in the front bumper, hood rolled in at the leading edge , broken license plate and a bunch of foam looking stuff.

I actually let her off (Young girl looked like she just got her license) when I was that age I rear ended a guys brand new Trans Am and since it didn’t do any damage he let me off free & clear so thought I would pay it forward too. Anyway since I was extremely busy with work today training a new guy, dealing with my pregnant wife, and other BS. Didn't want to have to deal with this S right now if I had no damage to my truck.

Well as the day progressed I began to listen for odd noises with my Ranger, and had that feeling like where you swear the truck drives differently. Even though there was no visible damage, I looked all over the back. I noticed the spacing between my bed and cab is off by 1/4 inch on one side. I can fit two fingers tight in the gap on one side and two fingers with a little space to give on the other??

This bugging me I decided to drive down to my local Ford dealer and look and compare measurements with other brand new 2011's. My dealer had 12+ new Rangers equipped just like mine, every single freaking Ranger's bed/ cab had different measurements so I'm very confused, (They put these trucks together on Monday or Friday? ) shouldn't the spacing be the same on both sides of the bed between the cab and pickup box? Weird because all the Rangers they had in stock were were off, some more than others.

Made me feel better that I guess mine being off wasn't from the accident, but I'm still a little worried if my frame is bent or not? She hit me between 5-10 mph at least, enough to jolt my Ranger 1-2 feet forward from a dead stop. I can’t see any damage to the trailer hitch at all but swear the receiver fits in a little more loosely instead of tight but perhaps that normal? Should I get an alignment or take it to a shop and have them check my frame or can a Ranger frame and stock hitch take a 5-10 mph hit from behind with no damage. First thing my dad said when I told him though was..... "Damn tough little truck"

"Damn tough little truck" for sure...your dad is right....If you where in an accident you should report it as a "vehicle still" accident this will not add to your premium because you where apparently not at fault for this crash. If you have full coverage you should be repaid (after claiming a vehicle still crash or parked vehicle crash) for any inspections, and a deductible for all damages incurred pertaining to the "fender bender" without your premium going up and without identifying the guilty party(as it where....and shit). If I'm not wrong your truck should be equipped with shock absorbing "fold points" between the bed and cab that could have been bent in irregular ways. Even a low speed crash at the right angle could cause a crumple in these "fold points" that would make your truck seem to drive and or operate differently. Though you do have a damn tough little truck...

Good to know, Although I had a claim a few years ago when someone rear-ended my Silverado in the Costco parking lot. They hit the truck while I was shopping, I came out and noticed broken plastic, license plate frame, parts from headlights etc... and my Chrome bumper to my Silverado all wadded up. My insurance provider 21st Century still dinged me for a Collision claim and made me pay my $500/ deductible eventhough this happened to my parked truck while I was inside shopping

But this time you where in the car....and had no visible damage....you also took it to the dealer and inspected it against comparable vehicles....If the truck is not driving the same YOU would be the only person to know it. If it where me and I really felt that my truck was driving differently I would take it back to the place that I bought it and have them inspect it and save your receipt. If you have full coverage insurance they shouldn't be able to up your deductible for an accident of this nature. This is what I do....I go into the office of my chosen insurance agent and explain the situation and then I have them compare it to the policy that I have BEFORE I let them know that I am a current customer....It works every time( in the state of Missouri and many other states a verbal agreement is binding.....check your state by typing ( "verbal contract binding" plus your states name in google) so when they say "O YES sir we cover that" you then state that you are a customer and they are LEGALLY obligated to fulfill the verbal agreement.....Iv used this a gaggle of times....maby it'll work for you..

Another good thing to do is get someone to drive behind you and tell you if your truck is dog-tracking or not. Most likely it wouldn't be before the collision, but if the rear tires aren't tracking straight behind the front ones, I would look at getting an alignment. They are tough little trucks but it never hurts to be sure.

When I got my truck, almost 3 years ago, the whole right side of the bed was smashed to shit. Looks like it got rear ended, but the driver behind noticed (too late, as always) and tried to turn, and clipped the corner. It had to be at least a 25mph it. It was BAD. No frame damage at all, I put a new bed on it, and now the bed is a few inches off, can't really tell.

I'm sure you'll be okay! Never hurts to get it checked out though!

I would say to get an alignment. Any reputable shop can determine if damage occurred. I was hit from the front in a 4 * 4 Ranger by a person illegaling backing on a roadway, and my vehicle didn't ride straight after that. The shop confirmed that, and I could tell because an alignment wouldn't correct the steering. However, a collision from the rear likely would be closer to the center, so you may feel like the vehicle is riding differently and it may not be. Either way, doing nothing doesn't answer your question.

Next, even though you let the person go, doesn't mean they aren't responsible for damage. Insurance companies always say that no matter how small the accident may seem, get the police involved since they can still take a report (even if no citation is issued). Now, she could deny hitting you, and any damage would be questioned -- esp. with a new vehicle, and why you drove away.

Last, I want to comment on Andy's post about your deductible going up. Accidents reduce the market value of a vehicle (which ultimately reduces the premiums). Therefore, vehicles can be insured for less money after a significant accident, however, no apparent damage occurred in this example, so why would a person want to lower the value of his/her vehicle? Also, I think there is confusion over the meaning of a deductible. The deductible is set by you and not the insurance company. The lower the deductible the higher the premiums (since the more money the insurance company would pay out in a claim). Rates rise based on the dollar amt. of a claim but not proportionally. Jumping ahead, if the girl had no insurance or you were at fault and your insurance company paid the damages, your rates would likely rise, but your deductible would stay the same. The deductible is the amt. you pay out of pocket. If I'm at fault, my deductible is $500 regardless of damage done to my vehicle.

Glad you are O.K., but get your vehicle checked out A.S.A.P.

I honestly highly doubt a hit at 5-10 MPH will do any frame damage. That's probably the same force that a trailer exhibits coming to a stop.

But if it really worries you, go and get it checked out.

Same thing happened to me the other day in my 2009. Ruined the other guys bumper and all it did was clean my bumper. I even had a F150 hit my 95 a long time ago and no damage to either. You are most likely just fine.

Sounds like you were very nice and forgiving. I'd be the same with my old Ranger, but I don't know about a brand new one.. It sounds like your truck is totally fine and you're just a bit paranoid. I'd forget about it.

As far as the bed spacing. My '95 is the same way. Staring at it sometimes I swear something is off..But like you said, they're pretty much all like that. Nothing to worry about.

You sound like a good person. Very nice thing you did. You never know how some people will react to little fender benders.

Sorry to hear about that man. This incedent prooves the old saying "built ford tough" doesn't it. I had an eldery woman rearend my truck while I was in walmart about 5 months ago. It did no damage to mine at all, but hers was tore all to pieces. She made a big deal out of it and I did report it to my insurance, but I haven't heard a single thing about it since. While I talked to her while we was waiting on the police (always around when you don't need them, but never to be found when you do which is typical) she kept adding more and more to the cost of damages to her car. I bet the reason why I haven't heard anything is because she tried this with geico and it backfired on her. My premiums never went up, and the truck is still fine today with no problems at all. And she hit me alot harder that what occured with your incedent. I would've let it go myself but she wouldn't let anything go.

The difference your "feeling" is probably in your head. The brain does funny things like that. My bed spacing isn't perfect either so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I probably would have laughed, taken pictures, and let her go too. That's why I keep a trailer hitch on my truck. I don't own a trailer.
