The older the vehicle the cheaper the Registration.
The high fee you pay is your yearly registration there is a one time fee for regular plates. a $10 extra fee for Personalized. and Normally about $20 for the other tags like the Memorial plates, School plates and that extra money goes towards the charity or whatever it benefits.

Virginia actually has the cheapest fee for personal plates in the country and also has the highest concentration of personalized plates than any other State. The Virginian Pilot had an article about it a couple years ago
