Default Badging 101, Ranger is next....

Well after much debate and research, I found that the Ranger will be the next long term victim of badging. Now let me explain what badging is. Basicly you've bought one vehicle under a certain name, but in actuallity you've really bought another vehicle with a different name instead. This has been going on since the late 60's and 70's and it has caused more damage than people realize. Back in late 70's badging caused some models to get deleted, one company called AMC went out of business due to badging and several other reasons as well. Now Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Saturn are gone because of this and very poor management and exsessive spending. Fortunately The Ranger has survived it so far, but I fear the day is coming though. The auto industry needs to wake up and see what's happening by doing "badging", IMO.

rangers getting axed this year but i see what you mean.

its cheaper and easier just to make on badge of the same car/truck.

maybe just 2 badges, a plain jane and a luxury, like Ford/Lincoln

Yep. That's pretty much the story. Badging has done alot of damage. In reallity we'll see the Ranger again under a different name with a few minor changes is all really. I thought I'd post what badging really is so that new members and guests know exactly what it is and how bad it has been for the auto industry as a whole.

Most people dont understand what this is. Ive tried explaining to a friend of mine that the Lincoln luxury pick-up is just a renamed F-150 with luxury options. She told me I was full of shit.

I had a Pontiac Vibe, which I traded to get my truck. It was really a Toyota Matrix with Pontiac badge. Even in 2009 when they changed the Vibe, they changed the Matrix then too. Most of their parts match up. The only difference is in the body.

They have been doing this for years. The Fox platform cougarand thunderbird shared everything except for the back half of the bodywork and some trim on the nose. Ditto with the MN12 platform. Most cars that look similar to another that are built under the same company, usually are the same car, just kitted slightly differently. THe only difference between the Taurus and Sable for years was a little bit of upscaled interior bits and a grille. I personally think it is cheap business and shitty marketing. just my 0.02
The upside however is that they produce more parts to make up for the extra volume produced, so down the line, they may be a little more available.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact the ranger is literally the same as the Bseries Mazda (like the Mark and F150 pictured above). Many members on here in fact drive a Bseries not a Ranger. I was told a few years back that Ford is going to re-badge the Ranger as F100... but I'll believe it when I see it since we've been hearing "this is the last year" for quite some time now....

Personally I think GM was the worst a few years ago. Build a Chevy and rebadge it into a Buick, to a Pontiac, to an Oldsmobile, to a Cadillac, and use left overs to build a Saturn. Then they had cars that were shared with Toyota and Geo. And whats up with Chevy and GMC? Im really surprised they still have GMC. Then there was Holden/Vauxhall/Pontiac/Chevy/Cadillac thing. Heck the Aveo and upcoming Sonic is a rebadged Daewoo.
Luckily Ford is growing out of this, at the cost of Mercury. The only problem left is Lincoln, but they are focused on making their cars as different as possible, so its not just an overpriced Ford with a Lincoln badge.

I agree on pretty much what everyone said, I think there should be too companies, one average joe and one average James.

-Ford Lincolin
-Chev Caddy
-Dodge Chrysler
-Toyota Lexus (I think Scion should just go under Toyota as a trim lvl or something)
-Nissan Infiniti
-Kia Hyundai (lol at his indeed)
-Mazda should be its own company (on their way there) and should keep making a compact truck since they dont have a fullsize, at least fleets and some of us could still have a compact truck, but they need to redesign that suckers and call it the
-B2500 (the 2.5 from the mazda 3, i know its a ford engine but oh well)
-B3700 (3.7 V6 from the Mazda 6, Ford Engine again)
-B-ecoboost (Hell ya! need i say more)
-etc you get gist of where I am going

The best thing Lincoln did to separate themselves from the Ford cars was introduce the LS. Yes it was a reskinned Jaguar S-Type with the V6, but it was completely unique in the general domestic market. A pity they didnt keep on when they decided to start the Mark (insert letter combo). I guess it cuts too much into profit margins to make them a bit more different than some badging and trim.
From a sales point of view, someone who wants the room of a Taurus, and the power of that wicked ecoboost 3.5, but doesnt want a car that all the lowly blue collar guys have, they could upsell him the Lincoln MKS. Thus raising sales. It is likely just a way for the auto makers to keep business when the kids, they sold compacts and entry level cars to, get older and want something more sophisticated.

Interesting reading. Years ago I had a '88 Dodge Ram D50 compact truck which was actually made by Nissan.

don't forget about the toyota cavalier. the chevy cavalier was bad enough but no toyota had to have it too. its just a right hand drive version of the same car.

It was the same thing with the early Ford Explorer and Mazda Navajo, but it was a big flop for mazda, and the ford version of the exact same thing sold in epic proportions.
